What a Hoot!

2010 October 21
by Katie

The print I created for Will’s nursery wiggled it’s way into the hearts of many readers.  Like a tapeworm.  Except it can’t help you lose weight.  Unless it reminds you of that dang Love You Forever book and makes you cry buckets of water…thus experiencing rapid dehydration which any woman knows counts as fat loss.  Or maybe that’s just me.

Anyhoo…here it is:

You may remember it from our nursery gallery wall.  I think it looked right at home with all the other modernesque cabin art.  Plus I find myself whispering this phrase into Will’s ear at various times during the day.

But apparently it also works for birthday parties!

You see that table set up by Jaime for her daughter’s first birthday party?  Yes – that center print was actually the ABP poster!  And it was perfect for the owl-themed celebration.

You see, when Jaime sasw our nursery gallery wall, she emailed me and requested the print.  I made her promise to send over pictures of that Newport Beach party.  And she held true to that promise with photos of her hooters.  (heehee!)  Seriously though…just check out this fabulous owl pinata:

Isn’t it just darling?!?  The only thing that could make it better in my mind was if it was bacon-scented.  And the owl-theme doesn’t stop there.  oh no.   It continues on in the form of sweet deliciousness.  Both the cupcakes & the birthday cake were adorned with little edible owl designs that are adorable to the millionth degree.

And speaking of adorable, how cute is the birthday girl with her feathery birthday cap and the personalized tank top with the icing smeared all over her face?  The answer to that question is “Very Cute.”  I might go break out the can of icing right now just to slather it on Will just for photos :)

So did you love those cupcakes as much as I did?  Or how bout the pinata?!?  In all seriousness, I have a bat and I am available for pinata busting anytime anyone wants to invite me to a shindig.  Note that I retain the right to push little kids out of the way for candy.  And because I am immature let me just say – I love hooters.  as in owls you perverts :)

LOVE the quote, but the book is just TOO WEIRD! The first time I read it to my daughter when she was a baby I was getting choked up until I got to the page where the old mom is driving her to grown sons house, climbs in his upstairs bedroom window, and rocks him…. My husband and I just stopped and looked at eacher other. Totally lost its appeal after that!

    • October 21, 2010

It is pretty funny Julie…but I have to admit, I would totally be that mom. Will is definitely gonna have a hard time with me as his weirdo mother :)

Someone just gave me this book to read to my son, and I got so excited. I haven’t read it in years. But, just like you, I got to the part where the mom drives to her grown son’s house and said to my husband, “That’s creepy.”

I think I’ll skip that page from now on.

      • April 7, 2012

You know, I thought I was the only one who got creeped out by that! Everyone else seems to love it. I also used to skip that page, lol!

    • October 21, 2010

Those owl cupcakes are amazing! I don’t like cakes and cupcakes, but I’d put that aside to eat one of these. Too. Freaking. Cute.

  6. October 21, 2010

I love that print!! (as well as the whole owl trend for kids) I know some people are over it, but I can’t get enough and I’m usually not one for anything too trendy. I don’t even have any kids, but that Dwell Studio crib bedding that’s out there with the owls on it? Love it!!

Those cupcakes are indeed adorable, btw.

  7. October 21, 2010

I love it! And kids with icing are adorable!

Also, have you seen the white ceramic owls at West Elm?

    • October 21, 2010

I have Cait! And they are adorable! I don’t know if I like them more or that owl snow globe….die :)

I can’t get enough hooters! I have an aversion to birds (a family superstition) but I can’t help myself when it comes to owls. I just LOVE them. Have you see Nicole’s (from Making it Lovely) owl cookie jar?? Ughhh, I wanna steal it. Bad.

    • October 21, 2010

I have Liz…Nicole has such great taste. And that owl probably has great tasting goodies inside too :)

I want to do an owl-themed nursery for my next bebe just so that I could use that print!! Love love love it!

  12. October 21, 2010

I love the print and the party is so cute! But can I be honest with you? The book “I Love You Forever” creeps me out. I mean, this woman is crawling into her grown son’s own house and picking him up and rocking him? Heebie Jeebies. Mommy issues for sure.

But, the print is so cute and the quote “I’ll love you forever I’ll like you for always as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be” is so accurate and sweet. Just the book itself makes me feel weird.

  13. October 22, 2010

Hey Katie- I love that book as well. I am actually really surprised that people feel weird about it- I have never heard that reaction before. I guess I never thought of it as a literal interpretation, but more of just ‘I will love you forever’. And that’s that and I like to think of it that way:) Love your print:)

This is SO cute! I love your owl obsession! :)

Love the print! Such funny timing on this post. I am in a program to get my teaching certificate, and for one of my classes, we take turns reading picture books to the class at the end of the night. (Funny tradition, but very entertaining, and good teacher practice!). I read that book tonight (and got misty eyed in front of my class!). By the time I was done reading, I was not the only one who was teary!

What the heck, most adorable birthday ever. And that print is SO cute. I am totally going to ask now because our good friends have a little cutey patootie named Simon, and his nursery is done in a Forest Theme, and that saying would be perfect :) Katie, could I pretty pretty please with owl frosting on the top have a copy of the print?

P.S. I think real owls are kind of scary, maybe it’s that whole turning the head around backward thing. Unless they’re Harry Potter owls, then they are awesome.

      Lorilyn,

Katie! I swear I am always so late on the commenting…. okay so every week I go in to my favorite “antique but not quite” type of store, Aunt B’s. It is a cute little store in my town and has the most random things. Everytime I go in I see this little owl piggy bank. And every time I think I should buy it, wrap it up, and send it to you (and Will). So, this week when I go in, I will take a pic and send the pic to you. If you want it – I will buy it and send it over. I can’t go on knowing this cute little guy doesn’t have a home. ;)
