Ever look to see what your latest ‘googles’ are? Mine are as follows….
- how to give yourself stitches
- do beavers live in a dam?
- videos of Who’s Line Is It Anyway?
- Is the underside of velvet comfy?
I apparently live in the country, order most clothing online, watch too many suspenseful movies which then need to be followed by comedy sketches. But seriously….I really do feel like we all use Google for just about EVERYTHING these days. And when my kids asked me how tall was the tallest building….I need to be able to answer it immediately because otherwise, it will be asked about three million more times. So you can imagine my excitement when Google came out with a new smart home assistant called Google Home. Oh heck yes.
I should preface this post with…we love gadgets. Gadgets are the tools of productivity inside the house. The right gadget can literally save hours of your day, make you super productive, feel more at ease and teach you new things. WE LOVE THEM. Anything that makes our life just a smidge easier is game. I always say it’s genetic because my dad is the same way. I remember when dear ole Pops installed a motion activated light switch in our laundry room growing up. We were the only people we knew that had one. Friends were immediately ushered into the laundry room to see it. I made them activate it…..wait outside the door for five minutes and then go in again just to see it flick back on. It. Was. Epic. And to this day, my dad always buys us gadgets for our home for Christmas.
This year, we are pumped because we have something to show off to him….our new Google Home. This new home assistant threw down the gauntlet in smart home applications. Let me tell you why we love it.
First – it looks dang good.
I mean….thank goodness someone came out with something that is a little more sculptural and finally WHITE to go with the rest of my stuff. Jeremy said that it looked like a small air freshener…but truthfully it is way cuter than any other smart home assistant so far! I put it next to this candle so that you can see how petite it is….but don’t underestimate it, because Google Home packs quite the punch!
Secondly – it connects to our Lutron Caséta wireless lighting kit. Yup. We heard that Google Home controls a ton of different applications so we tried out this dimmable light kit that connects to it with the Smart Bridge technology.
So what’s the big deal? Now, we can voice command our lights in our master bedroom. Basically we are the Jetsons and we live in outer space. Not only has this been super helpful when it comes to late night nursing sessions (my hands are busy and I can get turn the lights on and off with my voice as well as change the dimmer!) but it’s also super sweet when I simply want to lay in bed with the lights on and not get up to turn them off when the movie is done! And installation was VERY easy.
Guys this is a hardwired light that is now controlled by our voice. And not only that but we can add outlets too….that means we can do all sorts of cool things….like turn on lights when we are on vacation with our phone, schedule a morning wakeup paradise (think soft dimming lights, warmer morning temperatures, and turn off that noise maker) or even turn off the kids bouncy house outside….WITH OUR VOICE.
Just imagine pulling into your driveway and being able to turn on a fan, a dim hallway light, and adjust your thermostat before you even step inside your house. It means that all you have to do is carry the sleeping kid inside and lay them down. BOOM! Transfer success and now it’s time for Netflix….that you can control with your voice. How is this real y’all!? But it is!
Third – it connects to our ChromeCast. That means we can ask Google Home to play a certain type of music and then have it play through our TV speakers. Finally it isn’t limited to just the little speakers! My favorite thing is to ask it to play my Spotify playlist on the tv….the kids like that I can voice command Paw Patrols from YouTube.
Fourth – I can connect it to our Nest thermostat….because there is nothing more awesome than telling your thermostat to cool it. Also I may have been a little too eager to sing “It’s getting hot in here, so take off all your clothes!” just because.
Lastly – Google Home is quickly helping me become more organized. I am a perpetual list maker, reminder writer, and appointment misser. In the mornings, I can just say “Hey Google, tell me about my day” and it tells me the weather, the important things I have going on that day and even tells me my grocery lists!
All of that and we can ask questions and get actual answers. Oh and it’s still a great speaker. And guys….Google Home and the Lutron Caséta smart wireless lighting kit are both available right now at The Home Depot. That means your house can be smarter TODAY. That means YOU can be living smarter today!
