Kid Bathroom – Part 3
You’ve come a long way baby.
So far, we’ve taken you from gross trim to bright white and installed a light fixture…

Now you look like a little better…but those walls….the walls just don’t do it for me. I finally figured out why these walls are painted pink & blue. One side of the shared jack & jill bathroom is for a boy (the sink area is painted the solid blue color) and the other side is for a girl (the sink area is painted solid pink). And this shared area is supposed to be the ‘coming together’ of the two to make one ugly wall treatment.

Being the cheapskate that I am (and with a self-imposed $50 budget), I decided that the best bet for saving moolah would be to use it towards things like a shower curtain rod and light fixture (things I didn’t have on hand) vs. paint (which I have buckets and buckets of in storage). Also, this is a REALLY small space. To get that photo of the toilet, I have to stand in the shower with my back against the wall. So I knew it would only take about half a gallon (which most of the time is what we have left over after painting a real room).
The Bower basement Paint Shop had a couple different options. The first was an old quart of Oops Paint in a muted limey-olivey green…which is really a different color than I am used to but still liked that it pulled out the green stripe out of the shower curtain fabric. Below that is our old Master bedroom color – Valspar’s Sage Bud. Surprisingly this was a front runner in my mind. Last but certainly not least is Will’s old nursery paint – Comes the Dawn. Jeremy voted for that one. And I could see how it did add accent the shower curtain a little more than Sage Bud.

The winner winner chicken dinner went to Comes the Dawn. First of all – I had more than half a gallon…so just in case I wanted to paint the adjoining sink areas, I felt like it was a good back up plan to have matching paint. Secondly, I wanted to bring out a little bit of the cooler blues from the sticker art. And thirdly – one day I hope to remove the accent tile (it’s in the guest bedroom bathroom too so I won’t get rid of it in the house completely) and replace it with something a little more neutral.

After I chose the paint…it was just a matter of getting it on the walls. Cutting in was a splinter (as in a little bit of a pain)…

And three coats later, we have a fresh blue room…

I love how clean it looks (even though it is definitely not clean…I wouldn’t shower in there yet!).

It’s not a huge dramatic change – because they are still blue walls…but eliminating the ragrolled stuff helps me feel like this place is newer and cleaner and not as cluttered feeling.

What is this puppy costing? Well, here’s the budget breakdown so far:
- Shower curtain – $5
- Pastel White Semi Gloss Paint for trim - $0 (already owned)
- Sticker Art & frame – $0 (already owned)
- Brushes, sandpaper, tools – $0 (already owned)
- Light fixture – $11
- Comes the Dawn eggshell paint for walls – $0 (already owned)
TOTAL $16 (budget $50)
Future plans? After I caulk & clean, I really wanna add a little shelf and a towel bar and a shower curtain and maybe a couple hooks (I surprisingly have most of this in storage from my college days). Oh and a clock…because this is where I am going to start giving Will a bath – and I have no sense of time. I also still need to buy a couple things – namely a toilet paper holder…because TP is kinda important…and a shower curtain rod. Both are pretty big ticket items…and guess what? I’m going chrome people
So that’s it so far – I have a couple more updates before the grand reveal…but they might get interupted with other bloggy goodness. It’s like a chinese buffet – you never know what you are gonna get over here

It looks amazing. Such a change! It looks so elegant and calm now.

When I bought my home ALL of the trim in the entire house was painted tan, you know, to match the nicotine stained 1970s wallpaper. We saw the potential in the house and had the trim painted the brightest white we could possibly find and super light colors, our bedroom is a similar blue that you used here. We also used bright light gray and cream. The difference is amazing. I like the bold choice of a light fixture!
GAAH! Katie B. This is a HUGE change. It looks so much cleaner and less 1992.
Hi Katie- the bathroom looks great! How do you turn a flat sheet into a shower curtain?
Thanks!!
Lovin’ the blue hue! I’d like to meet the people who owned your house before you and ask them a few painting questions. What weirdos.
Such an improvement! I can’t wait to see the reveal!
Man, the paint made such a huge difference! This room looks SO much better already.
