This challenge was a tough one. It was to makeover a bathroom within a self-imposed timeline of one week with a self-imposed budget of $50. Tougher than Rocky Balboa’s love child with Chuck Norris. Tougher than Rocky Balboa producing a love child with Chuck Norris…seeing as how they are both male and one of them is a fictional character. Now that is tough.
But let’s first see what I did…here is the bathroom that needed said makeover. It is a very small space that is shared between a Jack & Jill setup…so both bedrooms have their own sink area but share this room with the toilet and shower. Before it was said to have “snail flesh” walls…thanks Lindsay for that visual…which basically were pink walls with blue ragged rolled texture on top. Top that off with tan trim that was peeling and chipping…and the fact that this place hadn’t EVER been cleaned, you have the before:
And here is the after my dears:
Before the shower was pretty standard…tiled walls with glass tile accents and some serious grody grout lines…
And now, we have a kid-friendly shower that is fun, freshy-freshy (instead of snaily-fleshy), and CLEAN!
It all began with the inspiration sticker art. I wanted this space to be bright and fun…it’s a kid’s bathroom and I have plenty of bathrooms to be serious and chic in….this one needed youthfulness. So when I spied the rainbow striped $5 flat sheet at Walmart, I knew that it would make the perfect shower curtain. And it was all easy-riding from there….
I raided our basement storage to find anything and everything that could be reused or repurposed in this space. It’s amazing how much junk I don’t sell/donate/giveaway….so my hoarding finally paid off 🙂 I found the stainless shelf (leftover from our old office) and a bunch of fun frames (former life – college dorm room) and a chrome towel rod (that was part of a pack that we had in our old first floor bathroom). Instantly I had a place of decoration in this small area above the toilet.
The great part about this arrangement is that I can stash some extra stuff up high (like extra TP if need be or even a hand towel or qtips) that will be out of reach for a certain Bower boy. And the room really needed a place for towels….it is a shower afterall…so I added the rack below the shelf for added functionality.
Probably one of my favorite things is this old crayon frame from a previous life in my college dorm room. I didn’t bother changing out the photo yet…this one was from my big bros wedding about ten years ago…yes, my hair was chin length 🙂
And this bambooish (yes that is a word…now) frame was a fun punch of green that played up the striped hand towels. I added the “W” bath letter….and yes, it does have chew marks 🙂
Overall, I am really happy with the way this little nook turned out. Especially once I actually cleaned it and felt like it was safe to breath.
The little trash can and toilet paper holder were both cheapo Walmart purchases. And the little red bath mat was a freebie when I bought the shower curtain liner. Since the extra-long liners are MUCH more expensive than standard old liners (think quadruple the price), I was able to whip out a $10 off a $30 purchase coupon at Bed Bath & Beyond and basically score the bath mat for free.
Oh and I did add a clock…it’s also an old friend from our office days. Now I have no excuse to not get Will to bed on time…well, I have a million excuses…but not having a clock won’t be one of them…
It didn’t happen easily though…here’s the adjoining sink area when I was up-to-my-neglected-eyebrows in bathroom makeover activity….CHAOS!
But the end result is exactly what I wanted…fun, freshy, with punchy colors and a little more function.
So even though I did well on the timeline front…I didn’t do as hot with my budget. The shower curtain liner did me in. I initially thought I would only need $5 for one…so that was my downfall…my achilles heel…my honey & pepper bacon….my weakest point…the chink in my armor…my dragon’s underbelly…you get the point….

Still not bad…but well worth the extra money in my book so you won’t hear me complaining. What do you think? Is is kid-friendly enough? Enough color for ya? It is clean and caulked now…so maybe I’ll give it a whirl one of these days 🙂 Toodle-LOO!
p.s. I am gonna share how I made the shower curtain later this weekend hopefully…so save your how-to questions for then, mmkay!?
UPDATE: I found an extra long shower curtain liner that is long enough for our showers at Home Depot for $12!!! So I will promptly return the unused BB&B liner and use the moolah for my sis’s registry gift…bringing the total down to $58.50 – yay! Also – I don’t know what was wrong with my eyes when editing the photos before but now the color is more true….must have been those darn rose-colored-glasses 🙂
