If I created a list of must-haves for a new baby, it would definitely include a swing.  It would be THE splurge item for the new bundle of joy.  I figure that having a swing means that you can sit, shower, and maybe squeeze in a meal or two.  Babies love them.  And let’s face it, sitting & eating & personal hygiene are pretty cool too.

When we got the space-age-lookin’ MamaRoo, I was doubtful that it would be much better than our standard battery operated swing.  I was wrong.  Oh so wrong.  It is not just better….it’s in a completely different league.  It plays my iphone, it has tons of different ways to swing and you can adjust the recline of the hammock part for little newborns or bigger babies.  PLUS (and this is my absolute favorite feature) it only weighs 14 pounds.  I can literally pick the entire thing up with one hand….which makes moving it easy for vacuuming or switching it to another room.  Oh and one other thing I love…the bed part completely unzips for washing.  Weston’s blow-outs had no power here!  And did I mention no more battery buying?  I probably saved mega money in not buying those D’s every other week.

If our MamaRoo broke, I would have no problem shelling out money for a new one.  I am actually really hoping that 4Moms creates an adult version.  That’s not a joke.  At all.

  2. Wahoo MamaRoo!! I totally am splurging on an awesome glider/rocker (haven’t decided yet). I figure I’ll be spending plenty of time rocking our first one to sleep in there. Can’t wait!

    I tend to splurge on good, natural sunscreen for my 14 month old and shoes. He’s got a few pairs of the Freshly Picked moccasins and we all know those aren’t cheap by any means, but their leather and they’ll hold up. Plus how can you resist their mega cuteness!!

  5. Wahoo MamaRoo. I splurged, once, on cloth diapers. But, the upside of that splurge was it was a one-time expense, my son looks adorable is in diapers, and hasn’t had a single blow-out in 19 months. Hip hip hooray for that!

  10. Wahoo MamaRoo! My son loved swinging in our travel swing in the shade while his older sister swam in the pool. It was the only way we could all go to the pool during nap time.

When my first son was born he was very early and they had a bunch of these in the NICU at the hospital all the Babies big enough loved them. 🙂 we are due July 4th with our second and would love one of these for him. Our biggest baby splurge would have to be our bum genius all in one diapers, we love them, so easy and worth the money.

    We splurged on Britax car seats for our son. They seemed to be the safest and for me, that is a no brainer!

  36. Wahoo MamaRoo!!!!! I splurge on baby carriers and once baby starts walking we always buy good shoes. Shoes are so hard to find second hand and they wear out so fast. So we just buy one good pair per season or size that the child is in and all is right with the world. 🙂

    We are about to become first time parents to a little baby girl would would (presumably) LOVE this! I’m so overwhelmed with all that needs to happen before I go into labor, I can’t even think straight long enough to look into the best baby gear that I need to have.

    That said, It’s likely that our biggest splurges (from our thrifty household) will be on a new dresser/changing table and a crib…since they are kind of “must have” items 🙂

    So looking forward to the joys of becoming a mom!!

I’m pretty budget conscience, but I have gone a little crazy on baby clothes (I know, silly they can only wear them for a couple months, but little things are so cute. Hello, those teeny tiny socks, so stinking cute. And recently I discovered on etsy a matching daddy/baby bow tie set… I could die.)

We have been able to find great deals at consignment sales and thanks to sweet friends and family, diapers and wipes are about all we’ve had to get ourselves. We just don’t think having a baby should have to be expensive. Would love to have the MamaRoo though!

  50. Wahoo MamaRoo! Holy guacamole I wish we had purchased one of these bad boys!! My little man was born on November 30, 2012 and LOVED to move. Still does and I think he would still get a kick out of this glorious beast. =) This item is definitely top of the list for our next baby.

    We splurge on car seats (Britax) and we also splurged on our stroller (found a great deal on a Bumbleride Indie and LOVE it).

  52. Wahoo MamaRoo! I usually buy store brand of everything, but splurge and buy Pampers instead of cheaper brands of diapers. Um, they smell amazing (fresh out of the package, obviously.) 😉 I also have to have the Johnson’s Vanilla Oatmeal Body Wash for my little one. Again, because it smells amazing. Apparently I have sniffer issues and need help. 🙂

    We just found out yesterday that our first baby (due in November) is a girl. We maaay have already hit up Target and bought a few outfits and I’m already wanting to go back today and get more. I can totally see myself splurging on more clothes than she’ll need because baby girls are SO cute.

    I can see myself splurging on the perfect rocker/glider…a comfy one in the nursery is a must!

    We were given a fancy-pants swing for our first two and gave it away to keep the love going because we thought we were done. Not so. HA. I loved that swing and so did the first two. Hopefully the third will be just as lucky!?!?
    We spend money on books and more books, cloth diapers and that’s pretty much it. Grandparents seem to have a bottomless capacity to buy clothes and car seats and what not for the little people!

    Our first baby (a girl) is due in August. I splurged on organic bedding for her – I’ve read some research showing that the chemicals in baby bedding may contribute to SIDS. Plus, it’s the most gorgeous pink and it’s so soft!

  76. wahoo mamaroo! While a swing is way up there, right next to a breast pump splurge, my next highest rated splurge would be a Bob stroller. We’re walkers, we walk everyday, a Bob is well worth the money and retains its value for resale when you have to upgrade to the double Bob.

    We splurged on a swing too! Ours broke with #2 and we are pregnant again so a mamaroo would be awesome! We also splurged on a video camera which I would totally buy again if that breaks!

  81. Wahoo MamaRoo! While we try not to spend an excess amount of money on our 9 month old son, Charlie, California Baby wash and coconut oil are essential for his delicate baby skin. And the oil makes him smell like vacation and popcorn- amazing!

    First time Mama here (due in September)! So far I’ve splurged on the crib mattress. Since I appreciate my sleep, I’m hoping this splurge will encourage our little girl to sleep too!

    My biggest splurge was definitely the Medela breast pump. Allows me to exclusively breast feed, but also feel comfortable leaving baby with husband to go to an occasional doctor appointment, get my haircut, etc. Love it!

    Oooo….this looks awesome and with my first baby coming in December I think it’s going on my wishlist! (unless I win it of course!) Not sure what I’ll splurge on yet. I reaaaaallly want that Danish crib you see everywhere on Pinterest but at $1200 not sure we’ll be splurging on that.

  100. Wahoo Mamaroo! OMG I really really want this. My husband is obsessed with this swing. We are expecting our first in August and we haven’t bought much ourselves yet. We registered for a nice stroller and my mom bought us a nice crib and my in-laws a really nice chair/glider that will last forever. So we definitely have splurges but that have been generously gifted to us!

    We decided to use cloth diapers (bum genius–love them) which was a splurge until we started saving money from not having to buy diapers (and now with our second on the way, we don’t have to invest in any more cloths, ka-ching!), but I do splurge on two cloth accessories: flushable, biodegradable liners for the diapers, the only way that I personally am able to make cloth diapering work, and a bum ointment that’s made locally and works like magic on any type of scary/unexpected/hot pink skin situation down there and doesn’t mess up the diapers. The liners are about $8 for 100+ and the ointment is about $12 for a 3 month supply if used daily, so they’re not major splurges, but in thinking about getting ready for number two, they’re both top of my list. And not that this means anything, but we borrowed a swing last time, so that’s on my list too. 😉

I splurged on a nice solid crib, mine was Ragazzi, and then I let myself buy one really nice blanket for each baby in addition to all the random blankets you get from sweet well wishers. Would love to try out the MamaRoo, we sold our battery powered swing 3yrs ago and man you aren’t kidding, it eats batteries for breakfast!!

  106. Wahoo MamaRoo! We “splurge” on the sensitive wipes for the baby’s bum. I don’t actually know if the regulars would actually do any harm, but we started with sensitive wipes coming out of the NICU, and have been on them ever since. No diaper rash yet, almost 4 months out 🙂

  110. Wahoo MamaRoo! We definitely splurged on our joggling stroller and our Ergo carrier. We have a large dog that must be walked 2-3 times per day (he needs 4-5 miles of activity in order to NOT tear things up). So, we need to get out and be active. The stroller is awesome because you can steer with one hand and hold the leash with the other. The Ergo is great, too. Our “baby” is almost 2 and we still use both almost daily. Great quality, great splurge!!!

    After 12 years (and many years of trying), I’m expecting my second girl at the end of September. All these years I’ve kept a mental note on what I would splurge on the next time around and a swing is definitely on the list since my first one loved it. We’ll also splurge on a stroller and baby monitor.

    I am 6 months pregnant with my 2nd baby- this time a girl as I have an amazing 4 year old boy! A MamaRoo would be such an amazing thing for us to have as the swing we “got” with my son was a hand me down used by my sister-in-law by her 2 boys. It was eh- my husband had to open it up so many times and use his soldering iron to reconnect the wires every month (we are total DIYers) and we blew through those D’s!!

    Anyway, when my son was born we splurged on a Bugaboo and it was amazing! The bassinet that it came with alone was worth it- he would pass out on our ritual walks and when we got home I knew that he was safe to be left in the bassinet sleeping!

Expecting our first in November and I’ve started buying all kinds of things already (even though I’m still at that “lump” stage rather than “bump” stage:) I splurged on the city select stroller…planning on having more kids down the road so it made sense (to me) to buy one that can grow with our family…thankfully the husband has left these decisions up to me. Dangerous move on his part!:)

    Ahh I am so excited for this giveaway! I have been eyeing up Weston’s MamaRoo everytime it makes it into one of your posts! I think my little man would LOVE it!

    As for what we splurge on… probably way too many things! We’re just starting solids and I’m making his food homemade so organic fruits and veggies are a must. Not a huge expense but its starting to add up!

    We haven’t really splurged on much at this point, but I think I splurge a little on clothes for my precious girl. It is important to me that she not only looks so freakin’ cute you want to eat her up, but that the clothes are good quality and can stand up to the frequent washings.

    I think a good diaper bag is worth the investment. It is something you use ever day you leave the house and needs to be durable. Its also important you don’t get tired of looking at it. Btw, I love the mamaroo! We use them in the NICU where I work so I’ve gotten up close and personal and fell in love.

    Besides swing I would say a good stroller. I am also hoping that by the time we have our first I will be able to spend a month with my parents in Germany (which obviously would be a big splurge to get there).

    We’re pretty frugal with alot of baby things like cloth diapering and breastfeeding and using some gently-loved hand-me-downs. Some things we’ve really splurged on are baby monitors and photography! Our baby had open heart surgery at 2 months old so the AngelCare breathing monitor was a must for this paranoid momma!

  125. Wahoo MamaRoo! I am expecting our first baby in 3.2 weeks and our only splurge so far has been on a stroller. I was so disappointed in all the options that we tried until I found ours. It was so easy to fold and maneuver that I didn’t really care what the price tag was. It turns out it wasn’t outrageous but definitely more than I had planned to spend.

The stroller is perfect for shorty me (5’2″) and husband (6’3″) and the stand converted to a hamper once we were done with the bassinet. We also splurged on an iPad mini + speaker to blast white noise over the birds outside little man’s window. We need our sleep!

  151. WaHoo MamaRoo! Our girl just turned three months last week! I have so many things that I don’t mind shelling out the cash for. I love the aden and anais blankets and their burpy bibs. I mean seriously, who doesn’t LOVE a burb and bib in one. My girl loves her wubbanubs. We have three. If you haven’t heard of these little stuffed gems, buy one ASAP. It may seem like a ton of money to spend on a stuffed toy and pacifier, but they are amazing. We also love our snuza. It seemed like an expensive purchase when we already have a baby monitor with motion detection for her crib, but this mobile monitor is a stress reliever for this first-time mom who has a little one who doesn’t sleep in her crib yet and bed shares regularly. Last but not least I am loving Burts Bees bubble bath lately. It makes my baby smell delicious!

My kid had really bad reflux at the beginning and the nap nanny really helped to give him a stable incline to rest on. I know it was recalled, but as long as you’re keeping an eye out, it’s super great. And I got 3 miracle blankets after muly only one got dirty in the middle of the night. That thing was awesome the first 3 months.

    We splurged on a Graco Pack’n’Play. It wasn’t crazy pricey as far as baby products go ($70) but we’re fairly cheap (even managed to score his crib for free as a hand-me-down!). So as a non-need item, this definitely counts. However it’s been totally worth it since I work in the travel industry and we go a lot of places with our baby boy.

    I just splurged on a high chair for our guy…we have a smallish house and I tried for 4 months to work with a chair that clamped on to our dining room table. It worked…but our table and the chair fabric were constantly covered with food. My boy is also a future drummer and likes to bang everything…the table was getting seriously dinged up from him constantly smashing his cup. And let’s not forget that it was waaaay to easy for little hands to reach down and feed the dog (an activity loved by both parties!). So, we splurged on the OXO tot sprout chair and I’M IN LOVE. It’s small, good-looking, and it’s so much easier to clean and much more durable than our dining room table. Love!

    We didn’t splurge on a swing this go around, but I think the next baby really wants one 😉

    I’m due with our second boy in 8 weeks (give or take, of course). We haven’t bought anything this time around, but my list from the first time would be a) an awesome stroller that you love. We have a Jogger CityMini, which is the easiest thing ever to fold, stow, carry, and push. b) a carrier. The Ergo changed my life – and I only used a borrowed one for a week while visiting family. I got a used one for free and plan to dye it! c) a bedside sleeper. We don’t do cosleeping both for safety and for my sanity reasons – but those first couple of months with SO much eating all night long was perfect to have a (ours was hand-made by my FIL) crib pulled right up to the bed, with the mattress at the same level as ours (it was three-sided, so no reaching up and over anything). All I needed was some shoulder strength to pull baby closer to me and then put him back over a few feet so we wouldn’t roll on him/he wouldn’t be in our space.

    We are expecting our 4th on 6-29, and I actually just looked at this in baby swing in BuyBuy Baby yesterday, and thought if only I could justify spending that much on a swing when we already have one…..I mean, all babies love that hold and bounce motion that this swing can pretty closely replicate. You’d probably be able to make dinner even without having to wear your baby around in a carrier!! So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
    And we splurge on diapers. I’m kind of a diaper snob, and even though I’ve tried my hardest to like the other cheaper, off brand diapers, there is definitely a difference. I stick to Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers. They don’t swell as bad or harden like other diapers, which means I’m changing less diapers (score for me, when we’ll now have 3 in diapers!)

We purchased it in a neutral color so it can be used in future nurseries and eventually in one of our media rooms/ living room. We were given an awesome one as a shower present two years ago that had different attachments (butt, mouth, armpit), an alarm if it was a fever, a temperature range on the back, and it remembered the last temp taken. That baby was awesome, until our son threw it in the toilet.

The biggest downfall is that it’s a bit heavy, but other than that I can’t wait to use it with both kids in it!

    We splurged on our baby hammock. It is a Hushamok and looks beautiful – but really we can only use it for ~3 months, so it wasn’t the most practical.

    I would love to try the Mamaroo. My 6 week old doesn’t like our current swing – she just wants to be held all the time. I wear her in the Moby, but it would be nice to get a break once in a while if the MamaRoo really does mimic the mom’s movements.

  787. Wahoo MamaRoo!!! I’m expecting my first baby in October (first for my hubby & I and first grandchild on both sides… Eek!). Being a first time mama, I’m thinking we’ll splurge on safety equipment… :). We saw the MamaRoo when we first found out we were pregnant and my husband has been talking about wanting one ever since!

  788. Wahoo MamaRoo! I am currently pregnant with my first baby and the one thing I’ve splurged on so far is a leather recliner for the nursery. I can’t wait to put it to good use!!

    We are expecting our first baby in July and haven’t splurged on much. We did purchase a pretty expensive (for us) rocker/glider but I will be sitting/nursing in that chair for hourrrrrsss so I think it is worth it!

  794. Wahoo MamaRoo! We don’t splurge on much, but I do stick to one brand of baby wipes. Which is odd because I hunt for diaper sales/coupons and buy whichever brand is cheapest on a give week.

    I splurged on a nice stroller (which we still love) and am splurging on a nice double stroller this time.

  796. Wahoo MamaRoo!!! I spurge on items just like this that make my life somewhat easier with a little one. Swings, baby carriers, baby bouncers that vibrate, and a stroller. This swing is so cool!

  797. Biggest splurge is a great stroller – preggers with #2 and so grateful after 4 years of constant use with our oldest, it is still in perfect shape for our second!!

    I totally splurged on cloth diapers but they are awesome and I plan on using them for baby #3 which is due soon.

    I’m currently pregnant with my first and our most expensive purchase so far has been the glider. I figured it would be worth it when I’m practically living in that chair over the first year or so.

    We were fortunate that all of our big items were bought for us or given to us. However we absolutely loved our swing. It is pretty for a little girl but now we are having a boy so it’d be nice to have something that isn’t pink for him 🙂
