Congrats to Jules! Our winner of the Zephyr Ventilation Hood! You should have an email in your inbox right now girl!
You are gonna die.
Literally. Dead as a doorknob.
And I am gonna have to bring potato salad to the funeral and walk the aisle of shame among all your relatives and friends and coworkers. And then your children might stare me down. It will be awkward.
So I apologize in advance.
But once you see what is our giveaway today…you. will. die.
Say your last words my friends….
You are dying. A whole nation of my readers are dead right now. I just know it.
But it’s true. Zephyr is giving away a ventilation hood. So pull your corpse up off the floor and read the details on how to make all your dreams come true before you kick the bucket.
Here is what is up for grabs….
- PRIZE: (1) Zephyr Ventilation Hood from the following list:
- NUMBER OF WINNERS : (1) One
- TO ENTER : Enter by commenting on this post with “That’s one killer hood!” and tell me the nearest death experience you ever had…mine is not really climactic. I was pumping gas behind someone that was also pumping gas and pulled out without actually removing the gas hose and nozzle. Gas poured out. I ran toward the danger and hit the button. Later my dad told me that it probably was the dumbest thing I ever did…running into a small pond of flammable fuel.
- PRIZE SHIPS : Continental US
- NITTY GRITTY : This giveaway closes on Friday, August 30th at 8pm EDT. Only one contest entry per email address. The winner will be chosen using Random.org and will be announced in an update to this post the following Monday morning. We will email the winner directly, so please make sure you use your regular everyday email address.
And if you want more info on Zephyr, you can check them out on their Facebook page.
GOOD LUCK!
DISCLAIMER: Zephyr is giving us a ventilation hood to give away to one of our readers. We weren’t perked or compensated for it. We’re just doing it because we love you.

Near death experience? Probably driving to work yesterday morning when our county started back to school. I’m pretty sure our interstate was being used as a speedway. Was almost sideswiped THREE times. *sigh*

That’s one killer hood! (And it would look fantastic in our kitchen…that we are about to remodel).
I was almost hit by a train once. Well, sort of. And the train was going through a town so it wasn’t going that fast. BUT STILL.

Being sucked under by an undertoe at the beach when I was 10. I had to be fished out by the lifeguards but other than a bloody face (that’s where I collided with the bottom of the ocean), I was no worse for wear. Not too exciting either I’m afraid…

I was on an airplane once that lost power to one of its engines. We had to make an emergency landing in Omaha and wait for other planes to be diverted to take us on the rest of trip. And lemme tell ya’, the Omaha airport is sooooo boring.

Killer Hood! Climbing mountains is always pretty close… but the view is worth the risk.

That’s one killer hood!!! (And I need it)!! My near death experience happened on a slick road in the rain one night when my car turned all the way around and I ended up in the opposite lane, no street lights. I was really shaken up, but was able to get my car turned around and back in the correct lane before anyone hit me!!!

Most people would think this was amazing, but I almost died riding a horse up the Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica. Horses and I do not mix. It was terrifying!
Dawn Ritchie says
That’s one killer hood! I remember getting ready to cross the street after school one day (elementary) and the crossing guard had stopped traffic but as we were getting ready to cross, for some unknown reason, a car came flying through. The crossing guard slammed on their hood and started yelling.

I about drowned at the beach when i was 5 or 6. My cousin and I were in the ocean playing while our moms (must have been looking at men)…. were in there sun chairs. I got caught up in a current and it took me far out and my cousin rescued me!
The End.
P.S. Our moms still deny this event to this day!

When I was camping as a young, clueless Girl Scout, we broke the #1 cardinal rule of camping and brought our leftover dessert treats into our tents with us for safe storage while we slept. Woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of a bear snorting and sniffing it’s way around our tent. Luckily it was satisfied with just a whiff of the delicious treats, and didn’t feel the need to tear through our tent and frozen-with-fear adolescent bodies to get a taste as well. Close call on that one.
Melissa Staley says
That’s one killer hood… I guess I was in a car accident as a child where the car flipped but we were all ok thanks to seat belts!
Calista says
That’s one killer hood! The near death experience happened a few years ago on the move from Denver to Houston. My little Honda Accord was packed to the brim and we hit a bit of ice on the freeway. The car spun around, slid across the grassy median backwards and we wound up on the other side of the freeway, facing the opposite direction from whence we came. Scary, scary stuff! (I found my way over to you a long while back from YHL! Congrats on the pending newest bundle!)
Sarah says
That’s one killer hood!
My near death experience…well, I was in a roll-over car accident about 10 years ago. The car stopped in the grassy medium, about 50 feet short of the overpass drop-off to the road below. It was a close call and we definitely had some angels around us that day
Erica says
That’s one killer hood! I was boogey boarding in Hawaii when I was a kid and 20 foot waves appeared out of no where. After crashing into the rocks multiple times, the last hit nearly knocked me out… With my board rope wrapped around my neck, I had lost what little fight I had left in me. My native friend pulling me out by one arm. :/

I fell through the attic floor, 2 stories to the concrete garage floor as a kid. Walked away with only a broken arm!

When I was young we almost got in a bad boating accident. We were stopped, and our friends boat was coming right at us, until one of the kids on that boat screamed to turn, and they narrowly missed us. Crazy!

That’s one killer hood!
I got in a weird car accident once. Spun out on the highway and ended up facing backwards into oncoming traffic. I was looking in the face of a semi-truck driver as he almost barreled into us, but we continued sliding and went off the side of the road just as he passed us. As a believer, I know without a doubt that God was watching over me. I was too young and stupid to really understand how close I came, but looking back it could have been devastating. Crazy.
Jennifer Kuhn says
That’s one killer hood! Wowzers!
My nearest death experience isn’t all that excited. Just a car accident. Fender bender really. Luckily I’ve been pretty safe my whole life. KNOCK ON WOOD. I think I might have just jinxed myself. 🙁
Kimberly says
That’s one killer hood! Hmm… near death experience? Once my tire blew out while going 80 mph on the interstate when I was 16… that felt like a near death experience, but now looking back… it wasn’t that bad so it shouldn’t count. Now being bit while nursing a baby with teeth… that can count, right?
Ashleigh says
That’s one killer hood! I think my nearest death experience would probably be anytime I drove with my friend Amber in high school…yikes!

I would have to say body surfing in the Pacific provided me with many a near death experience. I can still remember getting flipped around in the waves and struggling to breathe, and then being so grateful when my body finally came crashing in to the shore. The funny thing is the brush with death never stopped me from going right back out into the ocean after I caught my breath. Oh to be a kid again…

My near death experience happened when I was a baby. I was playing happily on the couch while my mother was ironing near me. All the sudden she had a feeling like she should move me. So she did, and I cried and cried. Not more than 2 minutes later there was an explosion and a huge “BOOM!” in the neighborhood. The big glass window behind the couch came crashing down right where i had been happily playing. To this day my mother swears my guardian angel spoke to her and saved me.

I don’t really have a near-death experience. I’ve had some scary, white-knuckled drives through snowy and icy weather where I thought for sure I’d slide off the road or into another car, but that’s it. Pretty lucky, I guess!
wendy says
“That’s one killer hood!” Thankfully no near death experience here. But I was holding my Dad’s hand when he passed. My Grandmother’s too. For her I actually felt her spirit go through my arm when she left us. My Mom felt the same thing and she was holding her other hand. A lot of people think I’m crazzzzyyyy when I tell that story, but I thought it was the most peaceful, blessed death experience and felt honored she shared with us……
Melanie P says
That’s one killer hood! The closest I ever came to death was actually painting a backsplash in my kitchen. I was working on a sponging technique to make a checkerboard backsplash and used a black enamel paint that was toxic. I got a headache, nausea, and was laying in bed shaking uncontrollably. I called my mom and rambled incoherently and she did nothing because she could not understand that I was dying and lives in another state. Luckily, the next day I was fine, but it was really scary and I had no idea that the paint would have that effect. I just wanted a black high gloss paint. Now I will gladly play extra for low or no VOC paint!
Jules says
That’s one killer hood! And when I was a little girl, I was in a mall parking lot holding my dad’s hand walking to a car, and a convertable whipped around the corner and ran over my foot and knocked me down. So I basically got ran over by a car as a little kid. My dad may or may not have tried to run down the car (they sped off, total hit and run). Miracle- I was completely unscathed. Not a single broken bone. Not a scratch on my body.

The closet experience I ever had was when I was about six. I was sledding and of course I went the exact way down the hill my dad told me to never go. My sled went off a rock wall and went into the air and I wasn’t exactly aerodynamic…. I flew out of the sled and landed in our driveway on my neck and back. Luckily all I did was knock the wind out of me, but my dad (who saw the whole thing) swears he thought I was a goner. Thank goodness kids are resilient!
Amanda says
That’s one killer hood! I was actually hit by a deer (not the other way around). He basically t-boned my car right on the driver’s side door and broke into my window. Thankfully I just had a couple stitches!
Leah says
Oh, wait! I completely forgot about the time I almost drowned at the Wet-n-Wild waterpark when I was 9. I fell off my raft coming over a “rapid” and due to the rafts coming behind me, I couldn’t come back up for air. A lifeguard had to jump in and save me. The odd thing is that I don’t remember being scared about it, maybe that was due to the kicks to the head I kept getting when I was trying to come back up.
Amanda says
That’s on killer hood!
I was in the backseat of the car my friend was driving. She realized she was missing the on-ramp for the highway and turned sharply. It had been raining a little bit so she lost control and we went into the embankment on the side of the road. If we had gone just a few feet further to the right, we would have gone into a deeper cement embankment.

Probably any of the countless times I’ve fallen off my horse could count as near death. Probably the scariest was when I was trying out a new horse to buy. I had just gotten on him and was tightening up the saddle and suddenly he went up in the air and flipped over backwards (with me on him). His rump was near a fence and I came inches away from being pinned between the horse and the fence, but luckily I fell over the fence and landed on the other side. Needless to say I sent the horse back!

And the closest I’ve come to dying was when I was in 2nd grade and decided to get off the bus with a new, cool friend on a whim and didn’t even call my parents. How my parents did not kill me when I finally moseyed home is still a mystery.
Rebecca says
that’s one killer hood! I didn’t realize at the time how close to death I came, but my friend and I were jogging on 6th ave in NYC during college (we didn’t do this often, don’t be impressed) and after running across the street, I felt the whoosh of a taxi speeding by behind me (we didn’t have the walk signal, but no one listens to those, really). I just felt super slick at the time, but a few years later, I realize I should have been paying way more attention to my surroundings!
MrsLindseyM says
That’s one killer hood! I almost got hit by a car when I was in 5th grade, probably wasn’t as close as I remember it being but it scared the crap out of me.

That’s one killer hood! No real near-death experience, but got in a car accident where I hit the windshield and it shattered. I was able to walk away, praise God!
Erika says
That’s one killer hood! My near death experience was an almost head on car crash. The scariest part was that my kids were in the backseat. Still scares me!
Shanna says
That’s one killer hood! My near death experience involves following an Asian man into his “basement” to see his “designer” purses in New York City. Ha ha ha. My mom and I heard “designer” and we were convinced he was the epitome of safety. Later my dad and husband swore we were never allowed to travel together again based on our poor judgement. But hey…we lived to tell about it!

That’s one killer hood…closest near death experience would be driving on the interstate and coming up on a car driving on the wrong side coming right at us.
Danielle says
That’s one killer hood! My near death experience was driving on 101 in Oregon and a driver pulled out in front of me, I had to swerve to miss the guy. Next thing I know I’m spinning and then end up at a stop about an inch away from the guard rail stopping my car from a 200ft drop into the ocean. I was also lucky no cars were behind me. Needless to say I hate driving on 101 now.

Now that I’m thinking about it, not a single near-death experience I can recall. I did fall down my basement stairs a few weeks ago, total top to bottom fall, bounced all the way down on my backside. Covered in bruises, but nowhere near death (perhaps it was the bottle of wine I’d had with dinner 🙂

That’s one killer hood! My 11 year old brother went out into the ocean and got caught in a rip tide and I went out to “save” him. I did, but only after swimming for hours sideways to the waves, and well we never did that again. He slept for 26 hours afterwards and I was grateful we were alive.
Jamie says
That’s one killer hood!
Probably the closest near death experience would be when we were rear-ended by a semi-truck. In traffic. The driver was texting and going too fast on a wet road. We drove away, but our frame was so badly damaged that if we’d even been tapped again the back would be up in the passenger compartment.
Elizabeth R says
That’s one killer hood! Omg that’s amazing! Lets see I haven’t had a near death experience but I do have a recurring dream about one. As a former swimmer you may understand…. Anyway in the dream, I dive under the bulkhead of the pool I used to practice at expecting to come up on the other side… But once I get under the bulkhead i realize it is never ending and the place I swam under is closed and occasionally it is also full of sharks. I wake up in a cold sweat, gasping for air, heart beating out of my chest every single time. And FYI… I have never attempted to swim under the bulkhead since!

No near death experiences for me, but my youngest had one. He around 18-20 months old and I had given him and his older siblings a fruit leather while buckling him into his carseat after a visit to Whole Foods. I got in and after buckling him up I turned around to ask him if he liked it and he was staring at me with his mouth wide open, not making a sound. He had shoved the whole thing in his mouth and was choking. He couldn’t make a sound or breathe. Thank God my husband was with me because he new how to give him the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged it, and I was able to finger sweep his throat in remove it completely. He was fine after a minute, but it still scares me.
Ugh, now I’m upset just thinking about it again.

That’s one killer hood! I once had to drive through a ton of snow to be able to go to work when I’d been stuck in my hometown for a couple days. We never get snow like that in Oregon, so roads were mostly unplowed. It took triple the time to get home and many spin outs and close calls. I will never ever do that again. That job was not worth it!!

That is one killer hood! My story is definitly one i would like to forget. I was coming home around ten at night from college. Our daughter was only 8 months old. I remember the weather was cold in february, but the roads were fine at five pm. I came out of school and didn’t see anything different. I had about a 25 minute drive home. I was driving along and hit a patch of black ice. Didn’t even see it! My suv skidded down a huge hill into a ravine. I remember thinkingthat my daughter won’teven know me. I haveno idea how long i was down there, i came to when a policeman was asking me my name. I don’t know how…but i have never felt that calm and that warm before. I knew god was with me. When i was a kid, my father built a rope swing in our back yard to swing into the river. Fun, right? Also, when i was a kid, my family had a lovable but very stupid Newfoundland named Joy. One day, i was playing in the river after dropping from the rope swing, and Joy, being a water rescue dog, jumped in after me. The giant beast sat on me underwater leading to my near death experience. Bless her heart.

That’s one killer hood! Before moving into my first apartment for grad school I found a really good deal on a mattress on Craigslist. I went to meet the guy thinking it was a warehouse but nope, some guys garage.. In the ghetto. Did I turn and speed away?? Nope.. I was broke and needed a mattress. Guy takes me back to his garage full of brand spakin new mattresses. Clearly stolen. Guy whips out huge pocket knife (clearly one he’s used to kill people with in the past) to cut the plastic open so I can feel them out. Do I run and jump in my car? Nope. I negotiate a price. 100 bucks with delivery. Was I ever really in danger? No probably not. Guy was as sweet as could be… for a criminal serial killer… But was most certainly the dumbest moment of my life.

Needless to say, we were very close to making it to see the lake but we chickened out. Good thing, because now I’d love to win that hood so I can definitely convince the hubs to demolish our kitchen just to put a new hood up… And a tile backsplash… and appliances… and paint the cabinets… oh sheesh… see what you’ve done? That’s one killer hood! My near death experience happened when I wasn’t even a minute old. I was sharing my womb with my twin sister, who was hogging 89% of the space, which forced me to be up-side-down, so when we went full term and weighed a combined whoppin’ 13 lbs of baby, the doctors wanted my (normally 5 foot, 105 lb) mom to do a C-Section since I was breech, but thankfully, right at that moment, my sister went first and opened up the canal for me so that I didn’t die before I breathed my first breath. So not an exciting story, but I tried 🙂

I was 16 years old. I went to the beach in Florida with my friend and her family. In an attempt to look cute for the possible boys nearby, she and I decided we’d hop in an inner tube together and float on the gentle ocean waves. Somehow no one told us that we were too fat to squeeze into an inner tube together. What started out as a relaxing roll of the waves turned into huge waves out of nowhere, capsizing our innertube with both of us in it. So there we were, in the middle of the ocean, with our butts flailing high in the air for all to see (with a big dose of bikini wedgi to boot). We couldn’t seem to squeeze out of the tube while we were face-down into the salt water, but alas, we were able to some how poke and prod ourselves enough to get out before getting to become face-to-face with our maker. At the time it was slightly horrifying, but now that we look back, it’s pretty hilarious . Needless to say, we didn’t attract any boys our way that day.

I’m racking my brain, but I don’t think I’ve had any near death experiences. I’ve been just shy of being in a multiple car accident twice, but thank goodness there were no fatalities in those accidents. I guess I lead a very boring and safe life!

My near death experience was when a drunk driver almost hit my husband and I on our way home from date night. He didn’t have any lights and was all over the highway…we called 911 and followed a safe distance behind him (so we could tell the dispatcher where he was)…he ended up turning the wrong way down a different highway and we obviously couldn’t follow him but the police got him just a moment after that. Thankfully no one was hurt!

That’s one killer hood! Nearest death: pretty much any time I drive my ambulance with lights and sirens through rush hour traffic in Northern Virginia. You’d be amazed how many people’s immediate reaction to sirens is to steer TOWARDS them. Yikes.

Thats one killer hood! I was going up a mountain in Kenya (they drive on the left side of the road so it was already confusing) when we saw a tractor trailer hit a broken down car and fall on its side and slide STRAIGHT AT US! I literally saw my life flash before my eyes (I always though that was a fake thing) but luckily at the last minute the back end hit the same broken down car and it swerved and ended up hanging half off the side of the mountain instead of squashing us into the side.
Mariah says
That’s one killer hood! My near death experience was a tragic golf cart accident. Seriously. My cousin and I were riding in my uncle’s golf cart and we decided to coast down a road which went down a mountainside. We didn’t think about the fact that without weight in the back hitting the breaks would cause us to fishtail. He jumped ship, and I hung on only to be flung out of the cart when we hit a tree. I landed in a small ravine and remember wondering if all my parts still worked. I had a few cracked ribs, but was otherwise intact.

“That’s one killer hood!” I don’t think I ‘ve had any near death experiences. Pretty grateful for that. I have thought a time or two that God protected me because a few minutes sooner or a few minutes later a huge accident occurred on a road I was on. Very thankful!!

That’s one killer hood!
Last night of fall semester, sophomore year of college. My friend asked me to go with him while he played DD and picked up two drunk friends from the bar. On the way back to campus, the driver decided to take a detour that would bring us past his crush’s house. Note: this was in central PA where all the roads are dark and winding… He noticed a sharp curve coming up too late and he drove straight off the road into someone’s field, narrowly missing a fence and a tree. Scared the hell out of all four of us, but it could’ve been much worse if he had tried to make the curve. Needless to say I had trouble concentrating on my last final the next morning…

I don’t know if I have ever had any near death experiences except in the car with crazy people driving around me! (And once I almost got run over in college- I was halfway across the crosswalk and a car was not stopping and almost hit me. Another car hit a kid in a wheelchair that same week, so I think someone out there didn’t like crosswalks!)

That’s one killer hood! No, but seriously. It really is. I’ve been following this blog consistently for many months now, but I’m a first-time commenter. Obviously the bribery of this gorgeous hood worked like a charm. So, to choose among my almost-death stories … let’s see.
When I was 13 and hated everybody (hormones), my dad was driving me from Maryland to Pennsylvania. I can’t remember why we were going on this trip but I remember being a total grouch in the car. Dad was driving up a stretch of route 301 in Delaware which, at that time, was a single lane in each direction divided only by some painted lines. All of a sudden, Dad inexplicably switches lanes. So now he’s barreling down the highway in the wrong lane (which blessedly had no oncoming cars at the time) whistling. At first, my 13-year-old cantankerous self was committed to pretending like this was no big deal. But then traffic appeared in the horizon. More specifically, an 18-wheeler truck. Still, Dad made no move to switch back to his lane. At this point, I am wondering if he’s messing with me or seriously doesn’t realize that there is a TRUCK about to HIT US. Finally I decided to speak. And by speak I mean scream at the top of my lungs: “GET BACK IN YOUR LANE! ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL US?!” Dad swerved back into his lane at what felt like the absolute last minute, the trucker laid on his horn as he passed us (and also, by the way, gave us the finger), and nobody died.
It was very bizarre. My dad wasn’t on drugs, wasn’t drinking or drunk, and generally was a reliably good driver. Reliable enough anyway that, as a passenger, one didn’t need to worry about what side of the highway we’d be driven down. He later would say that he just got lost in his thoughts and forgot he was on a single lane highway. Nobody got hurt, but I gave him hell about it almost every time we got in the car for *years* after that.
So eight months ago when I accidentally turned the wrong way down a one-way street in DC and my 10 year old daughter accused me from the backseat of trying to get us killed, I had to laugh a little. Here it comes, my dad would say.

I totaled my parents’ car five days after I got my license. I ended up in the middle of a cow pasture on top of a huge fence post that I had knocked down, taking a brick mailbox out along the way.
And I didn’t even get a headache from it. Ironic, when I broke my ankle last year from just walking down one step funny.

Wowza! Great giveaway! Thankfully, I can’t really think of a true near death experience! I almost died of embarassment when I was 5-ish and peed my pants on the floor in gymnastics class. In my defense, I remember clear as day my mom told me that I “had to go pee before class because I could not go to the bathroom once it started”. It was a pond of pee instead of flammable fuel 😉

“That’s one killer hood!” I haven’t had many near death experiences (knock on wood) but the one that sticks out most was when I was young (10ish) and we were stationed with my dad in Germany. We took a trip to the Lorelei on the Rheine River. And for some reason my parents and grandparents decided to get to the Lorelei itself we needed to go up this steep and winding hill. Step in winding for over there… maybe a goat trail over here? The vehicle were in was my mom’s huge truck. My dad had to back down the whole mountain side (if was like being in those shows with the truckers in foreign countries). That’s my story – or at least the one I’m going to tell.

That’s one killer hood! The closest thing I ever had to a near death experience was when I was in school and our bus got into an accident on an overpass. The bus hit the railing and tottered a bit. We were all sure it was going to flip over and the entire seventh grade was going to be smashed on the road beneath. Looking back, I’m pretty sure the bus wasn’t anywhere close to flipping over…

I was almost blew up my house and myself using a camp stove in my kitchen.
During a huge snow storm and power outage (while 8 months pregnant) I was using a camp stove to cook breakfast. Faulty line between the propane tank and stove, propane was leaking and caught on fire. I immediately turned the knob to off, opened the door and my husband threw the entire thing into 3 feet of snow.

I was 15 years old and on a summer camp ‘wilderness’ trip. We were biking down a mountain and at one point a gravel logging round. At one extremely steep part I was approaching a sharp turn, with a straight drop-off if I didn’t slow down. I’ll spare the details, but without any sort of drop-off prevention- perhaps a railing(!), it could have been very bad. Almost 15 years later I still have nightmares. Not. Even. Kidding.

The only story that has stuck with me as “near death” was when I was about ten. Our boat was anchored out in the middle of a lake, and we had a tube tied up floating (a tube inside a cover). My brother boosted me and I boosted in so hard my face got stuck in between the tube and the cover with a couple inches of water! I could not get out or breathe and I started FREAKING out!!! But it was only five seconds and my brother helped me out. Close enough for me!

Although I was upset at the guy, I am thankful we were both okay.

As my pick up truck slid down and ice covered driveway, I ran after it to try to pull the emergency brake (yes that’s right it was that old and the emergency brake was pulled by hand). As I approached I lost my footing and went sliding under the moving truck. My long hair wrapped around the manual window crank during the fall keeping me from hitting my head! That’s one killer hood! The only near death experience I can think of is the time my hubby was pulling me behind a pick-up on a car hood in the snow. He took the corner by his parents mailbox to sharp and I swung out and hit the mailbox.( It was an old farm mailbox that was shaped like a little windmill) I slammed into that thing and flew off the car hood. I thought my life was over. But then I cracked up because my man and my brother-in-law came running and were so panicked because they though they had killed me. Hate sledding on anything to this day.

That’s one killer hood!!! And for me, I’ve probably been nearer to death and didn’t know it, but my best memory was probably around age 11 and my cousins and I were climbing the tall pillars of a dock and jumping into frigid Canadian lake water over and over. As we crossed a street, my hat blew off and I instinctually turned to get it as a car turned through the crosswalk. When I was 16 years old the car I was driving was hit by a train. It was in the country. No Railroad Crossing signs. An embankment blocking the vision around a curve. The engineer did not blow his whistle. I turned my wheels as soon as I could. The train hit the passenger side and the cowcatcher on the front of the engine pushed my car into a ravine. The car landed upside down. I got out, after fighting with the locked seatbelt and fell out of the car. I had minor bruises and scrapes. One of the policemen said I was lucky and blessed! While on vacation in our old travel trailer, I must have bumped one of the knobs on our cooktop (probably while cleaning it). We all left to hike/play or something. When I returned to the trailer by myself, the smell of propane was very strong. I found the knob that was slightly ajar and quickly turned it off. I then left the trailer with the door open to air. I later realized I should have just backed away and turned off the propane at the tanks without going in, dumb me! So glad my kids didn’t come back to the travel trailer with me.

My story is totally trippy. My sister and I both swear its true!
I was nine years old in the Azores and we were hiking some cliffs to go to hot springs. They were pretty dry and there wasn’t much greenery around. The trail was perfectly safe, but I tripped over my own feet towards the edge of the cliff. My sister (who was pissed that she had to be the caboose because I was too young to be and therefore, had lingered behind us all in a pouty, middle child tantrum) caught me by my overall straps in the back and I landed face down in a bush that was NOT THERE before I fell. My parents found my sister and I holding each other, sitting on the ground crying. It was insane.

Once I was in The Amazon Jungle and the tour guide grabbed a vine and suggested we get all Tarzan like….so being a dare devil, I grabbed the vine, ran, and swung out over a HUGE CLIFF (that I had no idea was there). Please insert Tarzan howl here. Then my friend went to do the same, didn’t get a good grip and fell. Luckily she fell before the ledge, but she broke her tail bone and we had to make a stretcher out of t-shirts and branches. Later we were like what the fudge were we thinking?!? A vine??! I went tubing in a local river with a group of women on a retreat. One woman tried to save herself by pushing off my tube and pushed me into this odd whirlpool by the bank that was full of barbed wire! My tube popped, I was going under, and my arm was getting all tangled in the wire… luckily one of the women was a firefighter and she literally plucked me out of the whirlpool and threw me out into the river like a boss. That’s one killer hood. My near death experience is when my parents were trying to light a pilot light on our in-wall heater. Just two weeks ago, my heart flip flopped when I realized the water squishing through the lament flooring on my kitchen floor was spreading and it wasn’t from the ice cubes my 6 children kept “accidentally” letting fall out of the ice cube door, onto the floor. I nearly passed out, when said-mentioned floor was pulled up, only to discover my lovely dishwasher was leaking and had been for some time. I screamed, “NO!” and nearly collapsed when after pulling out the dishwasher, I discovered MOLD on my floor, cabinets, wall and insulation! Sure enough, I saw my entire life flash before my eyes when I realized I would have to tear out my entire kitchen and live with plywood counters and concrete floors until the husband and I could save up enough money to replace it!

THAT’S ONE KILLER HOOD!!! First, I’d just like to say thanks for the opportunity to win this!! Our kitchen is in desperate need of a hood, especially since our kitchen is currently hood-less and has no windows that have the ability to open. I have had a few brushes with death I guess and all of them involve water. The beach to be precise.i grew up in San Diego and one summer was particularly bad when it came to rip currents. I think on three different occasions at 3 different beaches I would get caught in rip currents and basically start drowning. Somehow I always managed to get out of them and make it to shore, but one particular time was really bad and when I finally got to shore I found that I had drifted close to half a mile down the shore from where I began.

Actually, I did almost die a few weeks after my 3rd birthday. I am alive by God and God only. Doctors couldn’t explain. Our car had a head-on collision with a BUS, in the middle of the night. Bus driver died while driving, bus crossed to other side of the highway, we were hit full on. Since we are talking 1982 here, and another country, seatbelts in the backseat weren’t the law. On impact, I flew; through the windshield, into the open, smashed and very sharp hood. Long story short, gory details unsaid, fast forward 31 years, and I have three small scars to show for it, two above one of my lungs, one on my face. We all survived. Dad, mom, brother and me. Some people on the bus weren’t so fortunate. So, yeah, blessed to be here. Now, may I kindly have this hood?

My near death experience was terrifying. When I was in my freshman year of college I took a wood working class. Sounds cool right. It was until one day I had to use a band saw. Supposedly one of the safer tools out there. WRONG. I started to used it and the blade snapped. That should have been the end of it but then door then popped open. A giant metal blade came rushing towards my face. Thanks to a recently had Starbucks I jumped out of the way and wasn’t harmed. I am grateful that I now to don’t have the face of Edward Scissorhands. A group of friends and I used to make soup for our church’s weekly soup kitchen, using the industrial sized stove and equipment compared to our various holes in the wall scattered throughout the city. In December, we decided to treat ourselves to some cookies. We’d be cooking for months but hadn’t used the oven before, but it looked fairly straight forward. We preheated the oven, stuck the dough in, and waited. When the timer went off, one of our friends opened the oven – I was next to him trying to peer in. WHOOSH! A two-foot fireball (really!) flew across the room, hitting the stainless steel cabinets on the other side of the kitchen. He got a bit scotched on his face, but was thankfully unharmed. As it turned out, we needed to first light the oven, rather than just run the gas for 20 minutes with four burners flaming on the stove…

It chills me to think about it. Girls vacation in Key West… We were riding two per jet ski. My friend and I were opening it up to see how fast we could go on the calm gulf side of the island. We weren’t paying attention while we were crossing a boat right of way. We’ll there was a boat zooming by. I never say it. Thank God my friend who was driving did. She pulled the jet ski hard to the right and dumped us both into the water. We were scared to death. She really saved our lives. We got back on the jet ski and cried in each others arms. I’ve almost died quite a few times actually, so I’ll give you a PG-13 story, lol. Once when I was a kid, (read: early teenager) me and my cousins were up late watching Scream and kept hearing a pounding on the sliding glass door leading to the deck. We armed ourselves with whatever random “weapons” we could find (stapler, fork, curtain rod, etc) and threw back the curtain on the window. Turns out, it was my black lab’s tail happily hitting the door waiting to come in.

Nearest death experience– I was in Naples for work for two months last summer (yes, I know how snotty that sounds and how crazy-lucky I am) and it’s a city known for it’s awful driving conditions. I honest to goodness thought I was going to die to death when driving. Once a car pulled out right in front of me, when I was on the highway going 60 mph. I somehow threaded through an impossibly small gap between that car and an oncoming car. I really really really thought all three of us in the car were as good as dead. “That’s one killer hood!” My only near death experience is one I don’t remember because I was a baby. I was the second child, and my mom was never one to freak out or worry. One day while I was napping, she couldn’t get it out of her head to go check on me, so she finally did. She walked into the room to find that my big thick beautiful afghan that hung on the side of the crib had fallen totally over me. She pulled it off to find that my face was blue. She grabbed me and rushed around in a panic and in all the jostling, I began to breathe again. That afghan was never hung on a crib again although it was in our family for years. (It was light pink, white, and light blue chevron, made by my grandmother, and absolutely beautiful!) I happen to know that mom is making me one in teal, white, and gray for Christmas. 🙂

Hmm…I don’t think I’ve really had any “near death” experiences. I’ve had plenty of moments where I’ve felt my heart skip a beat though! It was usually something harmless like thinking I missed the last step or something. Falling off horses can be pretty scary but I don’t think I consider that “near death.” I guess I should be counting my blessings, then 🙂

I used to volunteer at the fire department by my parent’s house. Living out in the country, the county departments rely on the rural ones to run a lot of calls, so we were more than just your basic ambulance. We were one step below paramedics which meant we could start IVs and administer certain drugs. Picked up a guy who had OD’d on heroin, then took a lot of his dad’s methodone – he was pretty sick. Started an IV on him and he bleed onto my pants where I had a cut on my knee. Had to get tested for HIV, scariest few days of my life. Came back negative though! 🙂

One time, about 10 years ago I was on a row boat in the middle of a lake after drinking a little in the middle of April (read COLD water!!). We happened to be by a power plant as well that has an intake from the lake to cool the coal and happens to have a history of occasionally sucking people down if you get too close. Well the boat tipped over…. and we couldnt get it to flip back over so had to swim to shore in clothes, freezing water, and we were near the power plant. Scary!! And also dumb of us to go out….

I went white water rafting on the White Salmon river in Washington/Oregon. It was SUPPOSED to be a class 3 river with a class 3/4 waterfall at the end. It was a class 4 river with a class 5 waterfall due to increased rainfall that year. Our boat tipped over going over the waterfall and my whole boat (me, my husband, my fatherin law, my two brothers in law and a sister in law) all fell out and had to swim for it. What made it so near death was the SECOND class 3 waterfall down the river that we were all headed for with no boat. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!

That’s one killer hood!… Near death experiences follow me around like the plague… Probably has something do with my last name but recently I was mowing the backyard when I ran over a snake (unknowingly). It was massive and the law mower chopped him in half (I’m thinking it was a male snake because it was that big… Beer belly and all). The 2 pieces each about 2 feet long went twirling through the air right past my head. I had a come to Jesus moment right then and there. Anyway I’m mowing the lawn more often these days so it doesn’t become the long green playground for the slithering types.

“That’s one killer hood!”. I’ll start with my last rights given by a priest. I had carbon monoxide poisoning. Ice had covered the ventilation vent on my dryer.
My ICU doctor called my parents (they were south for the winter) and told them to fly home ASAP. They didnt think I would survive through the night. I had the highest level of CO2 poisoning that had ever walked! walked! into their hospital on my own. The hospital staff brought me a meal, weird, I thought, then a priest came in while I’m on the phone with my mother. I told her, “I have to go now, a priest is here to give me my last rights.” I was dismissed two days later.
Miracle. I was left with a red handprint on my arm. Guardian angel?

I was putting things in the back of my trunk on a semi busy street near my parents house. There was a car parked behind me. I was busy shoving things into my truck when I heard two cars hit. I looked up and saw one car spiraling out of control and slam into the car parked behind me. That car got shoved forward pinning me between my car and the car that was behind me. I didn’t have a scratch on me tho. The way the bumpers bent around me, I had about a 1 foot by 1 foot space that was enough room for me to stand in. My mom saw the whole thing and was hysterical. I just was upset about my car. Glad it worked out for the best. No one was hurt and we all walked away. Hope I win!

So I was run over by a car. No seriously – not some wimpy ‘over my big toe’ or ‘watch out! that was a close one…’ moment. Nope RUN OVER. I was four and inside my brother’s two-door Nova in the pre seatbelt or car seat era. While he was parking it, I rammed open the door from inside without realizing he wasn’t at a complete stop, slipped under the car and over me the car went. The doctor said I was very lucky to have been so young because my bones were soft so I had no lasting damage. My sincere apology to parents who read this and wince. I always thought it was a funny ‘ha-ha’ story when I was kid, but now that I have kids it kind of makes me ill to think about my poor parents! However, the empathy does not get in the way of exploiting the shock value of the story in a ploy to get a fabulous range hood or making my big brother feel guilty about running me over…

My closest near death experience came on a bus when I was in 1st grade. Picture this: Winter in the wilds of Colorado, icy roads, bus full of elementary students, and a drunk bus driver. Turns left to go down the cliff towards the valley, hits a pinto (killing three college students on their way to the ski slopes), and the bus skids around the corner, with the back of the bus going off the cliff. I was in the back seat (of course) so was hanging in the air. I think the back tires just managed to stay on the ground, but just barely. Very scary.

The closest I ever came to death that I know of was in 2004. I was on my home and had just gotten off the exit to my house. About 1/4-mile up the road a white car was flying toward me in my lane. I was stunned first at how fast the car was travelling and second that it was in my lane.
There happen to be two road barrel’s on the side of the road and I drove on the right side of them with just enough room for my SUV. The car stayed in my lane and actually brushed the barrels as it passed. I had pulled to a stop and put my car in park. As the white car drove past brushing the barrel’s I looked into the drivers window. No one, dark tinted and once it passed me it went back into it’s lane and I sat there in a panic that I wasn’t hit.
Not another car on what is always a busy road. I pulled back onto the highway and had not gone another 1/4-mile when I passed 3-cars. Was the strangest thing ever. I know that was a brush with death. I thanked God for the protection and prayed all the way home!
That once *that I know of* was enough for a lifetime.

That’s one killer hood! My story is kind of gross, so those who are faint of heart (or just don’t want to hear the TMI) may want to look away…
All right, here we go. My first weekend of college, before classes even started, I was doing one of the get to know you events on campus and realized that I was, um, menstruating rather heavier than I ever had before. I raced back to my dorm room and my roommate found me freaking out there, so she found someone to take me to the ER. I lost enough blood that night to require 2 units in transfer the next day… I was way too out of it to know how scared everyone was for me until way after the fact. All I remember is being really tired and really scared, and at one point the doctor yelled at me that I was going to die if I didn’t let them run the test they wanted to.
Turns out the birth control the doctor had put me on for heavy periods (of all things!) had rather the opposite effect to what they intended. To say the least. So they put me on something entirely different and I’ve been much better since. Scared the heck out of everyone and missed the first two days of classes, though!

My near death experience was being on Semester at Sea in ’05 when the ship got caught between two storms. A very large wave (like 50ft) crashed onto the ship, causing us to be without engines. We nearly capsized in the storm and were stranded for hours (all in life vests on upper decks) before regaining enough engine control to steer out of the area. It caused a ton of damage to the boat and several people were injured. Ca-razy.

That’s one killer hood!!!! My nearest death experience was when we were in Mexico on a catamaran ride out in the gulf. They let us get off and swim at a sand bar. But because of where some of us jumped off the boat we got caught by the current and swept away from the sand bar and out towards open water. I swam as hard as I could but couldn’t gain any ground. I came to terms with the fact that I was going to get swept out to the ocean {maybe a little dramatic ;)}. But finally, after what seemed an eternity, they threw us a raft to pull us in. I had a moment similar to yours. I was at work (I’m a stylist) in the salon I was walking down the back hall and went past the laundry room only to find it flooded. The laundry machines were running along with a floor fan. For some inane reason I ran in to unplug the fan and only afterward realized how dangerous that was.
My second story happened only a few months ago while I was driving home from the grocery store. I was stopped at a red light. The light turned green and I started driving into the intersection. I looked to the left and saw a car barreling toward me. The other car had to come to a screeching, smoking halt. By the way, I was about 13 months pregnant. I still cannot take that route home and when my husband drives and we take that road I can still see the skid marks on the road.

I was driving on I-285 when suddenly I had to go from 70 mph to a complete stop. There was a LA-Z-Boy chair in the middle of my lane and there were too many other cars on the road to swerve in another lane around it. I didn’t even see it until I had mere seconds to react because of cars in front of me and it was right after a big curve. But that wasn’t even the near death part. I was at a complete stop on the interstate just around curve and people were flying past me. I just knew any minute we’d be rear-ended and die. The worst was when a Marta bus full of people came flying around the curve and came within mere inches of smashing into us. My little sedan swayed to the point of almost tipping over as the bus passed us. God must have been watching over us that day because we finally got a gap in the oncoming traffic where we could get around the chair and lived on to see another day.
Lessons Learned:
1. God is good
2. Avoid the interstate in/around Atlanta whenever possible
3. LA-Z-Boy chairs are far deadlier than you might think!

“That’s one killer hood!” When I was in grade 3 playing hide and seek with the neighbour kids we had a close encounter with the cattle in the field (where we were playing). While we were blissfully playing in the tall grass as the cattle grazed at the opposite end of the field the neighbour’s bull escaped through the fence. All the cows in the field we were playing went crazy, chasing this huge, black angus bull towards us. We all starting running, knowing we just had to jump over the creek and the cows wouldn’t follow us. I later realized my shoelace was undone – I tripped. The bull ran past, circled around and ran right over me. It did not actually step on me (or I wouldn’t be here to type this) but I was under with all 4 of it’s legs around me. It was pawing the ground and kicked me in the head, then ran off. I had the wind knocked out of me from fear. Haven’t been too fond of 2000lb animals since . . .

My near death experience happened when I went skiing for the very first time. After spending all of 15 min learning how to ski, I decided to follow my more experienced husband up on the difficult slopes. As I was going down hill really fast I found myself heading towards what I thought was a cliff. I swerved sharply and found myself heading straight for one of the ski lift poles. Because I had failed to learn how to stop properly, I slammed right into the pole. When I came to, I heard people up on the ski lifts screaming and yelling at me and I saw a very panicked husband skiing toward me. I can’t believe how lucky I was to walk away with zero injuries, despite not wearing a helmet and having hit a large metal pole at full speed.

I don’t know if you would call it near death, but I was in car accident last year in my brand new Kia Optima (27 hours old). A Toyota Tundra (AKA a huge, heavyduty truck) rammed into me while I was stopped at a light and totaled both our vehicles and caused serious damage to the BMW in front of me. (The Tundra driver was looking at an accident on the other shoulder and failed to realize that traffic in front of him was stopped at a red light. PLEASE pay attention to the road ahead of you unless you would like to join that unfortunate group of people on the side of the road!!)

When I was in high school on the way home from a mission trip we stopped in West Virginia to go white water rafting. I was sitting next to my sitter fully tucked in our ‘gear’ riding on a school bus that was taking us to my death awesome adventure and listening to an Australian woman (because that’s exactly the accent one would picture in WV) tell us the rules and caution items of going white water rafting. As the bus slowed down to our point of no return the Aussie narrows her brows and shouts, ‘PEOPLE HAVE DIED ON THIS RIVER AND IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN!!!’ I peed my pants.
Once on the river we were to get out of the raft, climb up a cliff and jump off. I kept thinking my whole mission was to stay on the raft and survive. My sister had to push me out and up the cliff I climbed. They were making a video to remember this terrible time and the camera guy was at the jumping point capturing everyone’s final moments on Earth. There was a boy who went before me and I watched as he cliff jumped /plummeted to his death– the next thing I know there was a floating helmet and no boy. (Peeing pants situation #2) In those 5 seconds all I could think about was the Aussie warning me about this very event. Boy surfaced shortly after helmet. When you go back and watch the video you can see my number 11 wrinkle in full swing, a very concerned face and me mouthing into the camera, ‘Are we supposed to hold on to our helmets????’ Everyone survived with flying colors that day, except for my drawers.

That’s one killer hood. When my husband and I were newly dating, our dogs got in a fight the night before he was leaving for a 10 day kayaking trip. In trying to break it up, I got bit on the hand. It seemed ok, but 24 hrs later my hand was very swollen. I went to the ER and they admitted me right away. I was there more than a week, each day getting worse and the red line of the infection moving up my arm like a thermometer. The doctors said if it went into my heart, my chances were not good. Finally after many many days they found an antibiotic that worked and it started clearing up. My boyfriend got home and had no idea because there was no cell reception where he was. Moral of the story: if you get bit by a dog, don’t wait to get medical attention!!

At least if felt like it, it may have been farther away than it appeared but to my young brain I felt my life flash before my eyes, especially since my brother had not even slowed down to check. In 7th grade I was cutting our acre of hilly grass with our old riding mower. I had just finished and was riding up our steep driveway when it ran out of gas! The brakes no longer worked so I was rolling backwards, picking up speed and trying to steer. I decided I needed to bail so I turned towards the grass and jumped off. But I didn’t go jump far enough and when the lawnmower hit the side of the driveway it toppled over on top of me. Too heavy for me to lift up.
Not too close to death just bruised up. If the blades were running that’d be a different story! It was 2 years before I would cut the grass again and even then I left it at the bottom of the driveway for my dad to ride up. Totally not worth my $10 allowance!

I was in a bush taxi (in this case, a rickety minivan crammed with passengers) in Cape Verde (a hilly island country off West Africa) and the driver was apparently unaware he had brakes as he careened down coastal roads, full of 180 degree switchbacks and rocky cliffs. And the few guardrails we saw were conspicuously damaged (from crashes).
I was convinced we were going to die — but on the somewhat plus side, I was there with my brand new husband after a beautiful birthday/honeymoon/vacation, after spending a few years living my dream as a freelance international journalist, and I kept thinking, well, if this is it, at least I have no regrets.
Of course, now we have a beautiful daughter and lots more plans and dreams, so I’m pretty glad we survived the ride. 🙂

Similar to your story, my step-mother put diesel (she thought the green handle was prettier) in her car once on vacation. She only made it about a mile away from the gas station before she realized what she had done and called for help. This was on her way home from vacation, so it extended her trip an extra night. I was driving home from college on a 4-lane interstate when an a**hole in a huge pickup truck cut me off, going 100 mph. A split second later, a deer went hurtling through his windshield, basically totaling his truck. That would have been MY deer, hurtling into my Civic, with much deadlier results, had he not pulled in front of me. Thanks, a**hole!

I was driving on a major highway and wasnt paying attention to how close I was to the exit ramp. I didn’t slow down and basically swerved into the lane, missing the guard rail by mere seconds. I am still thankful I didn’t total my car (or worse) that day.

That’s one killer hood! One time in college I was driving to pick up a friend who had flown back from break and their flight got in really late. We were on our way back to school on some deserted roads, I was in a turn lane getting ready to get on the highway when a van started coming towards us. It took a few seconds to realize that they were driving super fast and they were coming straight at us. Seconds before they were about to hit us, I cut my wheels to the right and was halfway in our lane and halfway in the lane next to us. We braced for impact because we knew there was definitely not enough room in between my car and the concrete median for the van to get through. But no impact came. I immediately looked behind us and saw the vans tail lights, still in our lane, speeding down the road. However, I didn’t see the angel that must have protected us. It’s the only explanation for why we didn’t get hit

My near-death experience was in 2004, 5 months after my oldest boy was born. I got waylaid by pneumonia (I have asthma, so pneumonia by itself is bad enough) and crawled on my hands and knees into the hospital. The last thing I remember is someone saying “We have to put her under”. I woke up two weeks later from a medically-induced coma. I had gotten Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome…the fatality rate is something like 80%. The hospital called in the chaplain to counsel my husband and everything.
But I didn’t die because I would have missed my little family and I’m too damn stubborn.

I’ve had a few but as I sit here and search my memories most of the really vivid ones include my dad and grandfather who are old school DIY and constantly terrify me.
Highlights include: the time my grandfather accidentally touched a water heater and it’s power supply instantly shocking himself and healing a hole/irregular heartbeat, that time when I was 6 and watched my dad’s leg come through a ceiling directly over me as he missed a beam in the attic and put his foot through plaster, the time when I was 4 and my dad went to thaw frozen pipes under a 1920’s house and caught spider webs on fire, setting fire to the underside of the hardwood floors (put out by cutting a waterpipe and spraying).
Basically my childhood reads like rejected scenes from “Christmas Vacation”.

My near death experience was on my high school graduation road trip. Three of my besties and I drove from Florida to California. On our trip we stopped at many planes, icludong the grand canyon. Let’s just say, we WAY overestimated our abilities. We started out a hike down into the canyon waaaay too late in the day, didn’t pack enough food or water, and then were nearly decapacitated when we got the a stream at the bottom. As we turned to make our way back up, A Park Ranger told us it was too hot to make the climb- we had to wait. So we waited, with no food, until it got cooler, then we climbed back up the canyon wall in the dark. Our bodies were more exhausted than they’d ever been- and that’s still true, even after I delivered my baby last year. Then, since we’d been laying in the creek bed, and it was dark with no humidity, I was freezing. The only way to stop being cold when your clothes are wet… is to strip down. So I, being the only wet one, stripped down to just my undies to hike. We were nearly crawling near the top… until we heard this terrifying scream: a mountain lion. Our guardian angels gave us a boost of energy, and we raced up the rest of the canyon wall. I’d never been so thankful in all my life (until my daughter was born.) Still so scary! I don’t think I’ll let her go by herself with her friends to the grand canyon for her graduation road trip…

I was trying to get my parents’ attention but my mom just stood there and waved at me. I guess she thought I was waving at her, not signaling that I thought I was going to drown. Luckily, my brother’s step-daughter was there and noticed I was struggling. She pulled me in and probably saved me, because I was not doing a good job of saving myself.

I was backpacking through India and as you may know there are literally cows everywhere: walking through the streets, holding up traffic, rummaging through garbage piles, and I even saw a bull enter a china shop. For my first few months there, every cow and bull I saw was extremely kind and peaceful. But one day, I was walking down the beach when I approached a pair – yes, beach cows – a bull and a cow, walking in the same direction as me, but at a considerably slower pace. At this moment, the path was narrowed by trees and a cinderblock shed on either side. I approached the cow first, and started talking to it and patting its back to let it know I was coming and trying to squeeze between it and the shed, in order to not scare it. This worked well, and soon enough I was passing it, and approaching the bull. I used the same technique and as I reached the neck, the bull stopped dead in its tracks. It whipped its head around towards me, and a second later jumped its whole body around to face me. I froze. Within half a second, the bull lowered his head, his massive sharp horns aimed directly at me. He snorted, and lunged towards me. Without thinking, I turned and ran as if my life, and rear end, depended on it. The newspaper headlines flashed before my eyes “American Impaled by Beach Bull.” I saw myself in a hospital with a new whole where the sun don’t shine. I ran a good 15 feet, cartoon style with my head way behind my legs, trying to avoid a new cheek piercing, with the bull trailing me by inches. Suddenly he stopped, but I kept running. Relieved, I turned around surveyed the scene and immediately burst out laughing, along with the locals who saw this go down. Disaster was averted.

Thats one killer hood! I am pretty cautious when it comes to falling, hurting myself, etc…but my crazy grandfather sent us a package when I was a little kid and I was carrying it into the house. Next thing I know my wrist is bleeding and it’s pretty close to the vein- he had sent us knives (WHAT?) and one was poking out of the box! Thankful that it wasn’t any worse than that but I still have the scar!

That’s one killer hood!!! Having a 9 mm kidney stone stuck in my ureter while 29 weeks pregnant…wasn’t going to actually kill me, but I sure felt like I was going to die!!! 🙂

We were visiting my aunts in el Salvador and were caravaning to the beach. It’s a small country so it only takes a couple of hours to get from San Salvador, out of the city to the beach. We were all having a great time until some guerrillas shot at the van we were rising in. Needless to say we hauled a@@ several miles away before we even stopped to assess the damage. Closest I’ve ever been to some real drama going down, but it was enough for me.

That’s one killer hood! One time I went snorkeling on vacation – I had never been before – and I was kicking along looking at all the pretty fish…then some of them swam close enough that they touched me. Long story short, turns out I’m terrified of fish. Like, have a panic attack and suck in a ton of water type of terrified. I essentially became a drowning, flailing mess. I had to be rescued. It was incredibly funny to everyone on board the boat, I on the other hand (captain of the swim team at my school) about died twice that day. Once by drowning, another from embarrassment.

That’s one killer hood!! Seriously. Thankfully, I have no near death experiences, but just today the tall dresser in my 5 & 1/2 year old’s bedroom fell over on her! What saved her??. . . a Fisher- Price Loving Family doll house, her little hands (she was holding it up like she was raising the roof while crying *sniffle*) and her guardian angel up in heaven, my dad.

When I was working as a reporter, I once talked my way past a police line and ventured into a flood zone. I promised I wouldn’t put myself in danger, and said I only wanted to take photos, so the officer let me through. To make a long story short, I parked on a bridge to photograph the incredibly high flood water all around and the piles of debris it had collected. When I finally got to my office, my husband called to tell me there was tremendous flood damage all around. In fact, he said, that bridge near our house was gone. I told him it was fine, that I’d just been there. Turns out, it failed and collapsed about 10 minutes after I’d left.
