The Christmas season is upon us guys! It’s only 26 days till the sleigh bells will be ringing and the cookies will be sitting out by the fireplace and I will be frantically wrapping presents because obviously that is what a mom of FIVE does on Christmas eve! I simply can not believe it! I also am trying really hard to get a jump on Christmas decorating this year and I thought that my outdoor decor could use a little sprucing. For the last couple years we have been putting the same things in the same spots out there but this holiday season I wanted to incorporate a favorite trend….flocked wreaths!
I was able to partner with JOANN on this project and there is NO store better for this project because they literally have everything you can imagine under that roof. Christmas has landed people. And it’s inside the JOANN’s doors. I headed there with a very opinionated six week old and scored everything I needed on sale. Can I get an internet high five? Just not too hard…I don’t want you to break your laptop. Okay, so before we begin, let me spoil the surprise and show you our front porch for Christmas…..
Isn’t it just so darn fun?! I mean….we don’t get snow here in Georgia but I’m feeling frosty vibes just from those wreaths!
Okay….so spoiler over and let’s rewind back just a bit. Wrew zeet wheeeeew. Those were rewinding noises by the way.
So when I got to the JOANN store, I was really excited. This is my first effort of real shopping (not just a snatch and grab of something I already knew….but stroll-the-aisles-and-become-one-with-the-shopping kinda vibe) with my newest shopping buddy and darn it, we are commemorating that event.
We first strolled all the aisles and I took some major notes from the pre-made wreaths on the wall….but I wanted something a little more personal. I also was immediately drawn to the buffalo check ribbon they had in red and black. It screams farmhouse christmas to me! But it doesn’t really matter what style you are digging this holiday…they have aisles of festive stuff to cover you!
I also loved the garland with the pine cones and berries and flocked details.
Then I saw they had flocked wreaths for a super affordable price and an entire aisle of christmas picks. Picks are hands down my favorite way to make a wreath because they are usually $1 a pop and can make a huge impact along with personalizing your christmas decor. That’s when the plan came together. I grabbed three of these garlands for my front door, and all the stuff I needed for my wreaths. Here is everything I picked up for my DIY holiday wreath….
Additional supplies you may need are scissors, a paintbrush and craft paint in red.
Once you tie your ribbon bow to the wreath, it’s time to beef it up with some picks. I like to make my picks look as organic as possible in the wreath by separating the bigger ones into smaller pieces.
I like to balance the picks on either side of the bow. I had three berry picks per wreath (pulled apart that is six segments) and three pine cone picks per wreath.
Each one was pushed into the wreath and then the end was bent around a flocked stem to secure it.
Next I wanted to create bow tails that added more pattern to the wreath. I cut a one yard length for each side of the bow.
I tied it around the back of the wreath form…
And pulled each tail out and tucked it into the wreath to create loops that made the bow look like it was cascading down the sides of the wreath.
I could have stopped there….but I knew I could make it extra special with a little wooden hanging word plaque.
I loved the wood effect but it didn’t stand out against my flocked wreath so I decided to use some holiday red craft paint to make it really pop!
I did one layer of paint so the wood grain shows through…
Then I laid it on top and used the stems too secure it in the little holes of the sign.
Our existing green garland that was looking super pathetic and weak….so I beefed it up with the pine cone and berry flocked garland and it was the best five minute decorating decision ever. Santa would be proud.
Overall, the entire front porch looked SO much better!
I loved the change of pace with the flocked wreath and that ribbon….
I’m not completely done with our exterior decor but this is a great start! I need to go ahead and get about ten poinsettias too 🙂
So what is the look you are going for in your porch this holiday season? Anybody else jumping on the buffalo check bandwagon?
I’d love to hear what holiday trends you are using! And stay tuned….I have a holiday mantle and more coming soon!
