Happy birthday to me!
Saying that is probably a major faux paux. Like tooting in church and then laughing. Or like actually taking candy from a baby.
People might talk.
But what do I care? I am here today excited about celebrating me.
Now for the baby-story. That’s what we do at our house…we make my mom tell the baby-story on our birthday. It’s a beloved tradition that I fully plan on tormenting Will with annually. So here it is:
I was born 29 years ago in the great state of New Jersey. When I was in utero, I didn’t move. My mom actually questioned whether or not I was stillborn because my older brother played Twister inside her belly while I rarely let my presence known. She said that sometimes she would feel butterfly flutters…even when she was full-term. It was probably because I am such a gentle & feminine creature. Right. Then on Thursday, February 5th, 1981, as President Reagan prepared to speak to the nation about the state of the economy, my mother’s water broke. All I know about the actual birth was that I was born posterior. Oh and one more thing. When I was born the first thing that the nurse said to my mother was “Oh, that’ll go back to normal”. Not “it’s a girl” or “Congratulations”. OH, THAT’LL GO BACK TO NORMAL.
It was because I had a large cranium that was squeezed into a cone-like shape. And then my mom didn’t let anyone take any photos of me as a newborn because she was afraid that I would be completely embarrassed later in life by my pointy-headed pictures.
Luckily the nurse was right. It did round out. Which is good.
What is bad is the fact that the doctor’s measured my head and told my mother that they suspected water on the brain because of the large size. Combine that with a natural instinction to NOT walk…and the lack of development of certain reflexes, and you get me as a immobile toddler in therapy with other special needs children with a mother who refused to believe I was anything but just plain lazy (she was 100% correct) and doctors who labeled her as ‘In Denial’. To this very day I think my mother wants an apology (and possibly a refund) for that misdiagnosis. I wouldn’t have put it past her to send my gradeschool report card to the hospital just to prove that her mother’s instinct was correct.
Anyway…so that is my birthday story. Not too exciting. Just sortof quirky…so I guess it fits me to a tee.
And just so you know…I got an early birthday present. I did! It was sent over by the fine folks over at FLOR.
They sent me an email telling me that I could pick out my preferred choice of their products. Basically it’s a free 5×7 rug! I know. Awesome, huh? You are so wishing you were me right now.
After a little hip-thrusts (it’s the only dance move I can do right now), I quickly went over to their site to check out all the options. And I discovered that they carry Martha. That’s right. The one and only. Their line of Martha Stewart design carpet tiles made me hip thrust even faster. It was borderline indecent. As did several of their new designs like these:
But then I saw this picture and fell in love:
I love the design. It’s divine. Well, actually it’s called Lattice but who’s keeping track!?
I didn’t even know where I would put the suckers when they came in the mail. But in my mind, it didn’t matter where they went…I loved them so much that I would find a way to work them into a room’s design.
First, we put in a runner formation along the walkway from the laundry room to the hall.
I really liked the versatility to put it there in a different shape…and the tiles, although they are thinner than I expected, are very comfy on the swollen pregnant feet. In the end, although both Jeremy & I liked it against the dark wood flooring and we loved it in the room with the lighter green walls, we felt like we wanted to see more options.
That’s when I suggested the rug-on-rug action. No…that’s not some weird Donald Trump joke. It’s that whole decor fad that is sweeping the nation when you take one rug and put it over another area rug to create a layered effect.
We tried it in the same basement room – over the current woven rug that is in the television area.
And we loved it.
Jeremy was doubtful at first.
In fact, there was a stifled guffaw when I mentioned layering rugs.
But as soon as we got the ottoman down and took a step back…it was like the doors of heaven had opened and an angel who looks like Peyton Manning had told him that this was oh-so-right. And every boy knows that you don’t argue with Peyton. Unless you are Drew Brees 🙂
But the yummy goodness doesn’t stop with my new birthday rug and the older Manning quarterback. Oh no. This is a VERY happy birthday because there is another surprise up our Bower Power sleeve. In honor of me turning the big two niner, the fine folks at FLOR are offering up a little gift for one lucky friend o’ mine. Just another way to share in the birthday spirit!
