September Giveaway – Oreck

GIVEAWAY

I’m squishing all the giveaways into one giant day (or a week if I feel lazy) of glittering awesomeness. Are you ready for this jelly? Confession…I am not the best housekeeper in the world.  I’m not the worst either.  But definitely a D student when it comes to keeping my surroundings clean and tidy.  I always tell Jer that he would make a better housewife than me.   He picks up, tidies outta habit, loves non-clutter, and vacuums regularly.  And let’s just call me a ‘free spirit’ to be nice.  Nobody likes to be labeled “Hot Mess minus the hot”. 

One area that bugs my boyfriend to no avail is the living room. 

See the new (used) rug?  Well, it sheds like a polar bear in Bermuda.  All that molting has driven Jeremy crazy.

We were chugging along just fine with our old vacuum.  It’s a sturdy (aka weighs 46 lbs) thing from the Macedonian era that has no fancy features but gets the job done.  So when Oreck contacted us about doing a vacuum cleaners giveaway for you fine looking folks, I was secretly hoping that they could recommend a lighter, newer, more managable vacuum for us. 

They bested me.

Yup.  It was like spaghetti dinner came early for this pregnant Italian girl. 

They sent us a Magnesium upright vacuum and an Ultimate handheld for us to try out.  Well, did I ever…

 Jeremy asked me to give em a whirl.  If that was his way of tricking me into cleaning…well…it worked.  And here’s what I thought about the fancy new sucker…

PROS:

  • Super lightweight.  Both things were no problem for me to lift up and down the stairs.  The old vacuum…well, I just let it slide down the steps and hoped it survived the fall.
  • Loved the shoulder strap on the Ultimate handheld.  It meant I had a free hand for moving other stuff…like matchbox cars.
  • Also adored the extender on the handheld so I didn’t have to bend.  These photos were when I was in the middle of some harsh sciatica torment…and bending was outta the question.  The extender meant I didn’t have to.
  • The upright had two settings – low and high built right into the handle.  Again…no bending.  Or pushing something with swollen feet while balancing on one foot. 
  • Sucks better than most.  The old vacuum is heavy duty – meaning, you don’t need to shave your legs, you can just suck the hair right outta them.  So I really was expecting any other vacuum to fail miserably in the ‘suck’ category.  Surprisingly, the upright worked AWESOME on regular carpet and hardwoods.

CONS:

  • You can’t store all the accessories attached to the handheld.  That means two of the different nozzles would stay in the cupboard while you get your suck on.
  • It’s two different vacuums…which is really a pro and a con.  It means one of your kids could edge while the other vacs the living room 🙂  
  • On our shaggy rug – it did fine.  I give it a B+.  This is really the absolute hardest test a vacuum could have.  I mean, it’s like the MCAT of sucking.  And it got the majority of it up.  I told Jer that most folks don’t have rugs with inch long fingers gripping the stray popcorn bits…so if you are in a house full of shag, well, first let me hope it’s not harvest gold & avacado, and then second, you might need an exterminator, not a vacuum. 

Overall, I am THRILLED.  Of course, this means that I have no excuse now to not clean…but at least it’s not a full body workout anymore.  Now it’s actually easy.  One Easy Sucker…that shoulda been the name.  (Oreck you can credit that name to me, mmkaythanks!)

  6. One Easy Sucker! Love this vac! I was especially pleased to see that it cleans hardwood and then can clean my area rugs without having to switch vacuums. My other vacuums don’t clean hardwood floors and I refuse to buy one….until now.

  8. One easy sucker! Sounds like my kind of vacuum. With a single level house full of tile and carpet, and not the best quality at the moment, some serious sucking is needed, in the versatile range. With a dog, I like the lightweight factor; it means I do it more often before the hair is ground in. Can’t wait to give it a try; keeping my fingers crossed I’m a winner!

    I love that it’s lightweight and “amazingly agile”! That means it would work great for getting those tumble weeds of hair from our 2 small dogs out from under the bed!

  10. Wow that does look like One Easy Sucker! I love how lightweight it is! I admit to routinely not vacuuming because of the immense weight of our current vacuum. That sucker is heavy and it really is not the best sucker to be honest. I would love to have One Easy Sucker of my own. I think the Magnesium vacuum would be perfect to give my muscles a break from the workout they get now when I have to lug our vacuum around the house and up and down the stairs. My muscles are too big anyway and cause much envy so having an Oreck of my own would be a benefit to society. We could finally all get along! ;P

    I love howlight weight it is. Carrying our vaccuum up and down stairs is rough.

    with your teeth. So a cutie lite weight vac. would be just the ticket.
    Man oh Man. A handheld would work wonders on the stairs, too. The mishaps i’ve had
    with the overweight tank on the stairs is a hospital ER’s dream.

    I LOVE the shoulder strap. I have an ancient (think 1960’s) canister vac that weighs about 40 lbs and I have to drag around behind me while I clean. This sucker would be a fabulous addition to our household.

  34. One easy sucker! I love that it comes apart to walk around the house on your shoulder. Great for baseboards, cobwebs and stairs! Also love the side brushes for baseboards.

  35. One Easy Sucker! OMG the picture of it basically laying flat to go under the bed is amazing! I could suck up SO much dog hair under things! I swear I sweep/vacuum every other day and there is always a small dog collected in the tiny dispenser on our vacuum. Now that Mckinley is older, mobile, and putting stuff in her mouth I have to make sure there isn’t anything around for her to pickup and eat and this vacuum would be AWESOME to have!

    We are in desperate need of a new vacuum. Ours is a Kirby probably from the 60s that we got at a garage sale. And we do have shag-ish carpet in our house that holds onto dog hair for dear life…thanks previous owners.
    The vacuum you tried looks awesome as we have carpet & wood floors and I’m constantly changing the vacuum head for the extendable sucker. And it’s lightweight, which is a huge plus!

    i love the handheld part of this! i have a dyson so i am not sure that anything could suck better….however, the handheld part is really a hassle…therefore i hardly edge. 😉 yes that’s nasty. soooo, i would love to have this handheld to tackle my carpeted stairs! they need some lovin’.

    I actually really love that it has a bag! My bagless vac is giving me fits … sometimes it seems like all the dirt I just sucked up ends up right back on the floor or in the air!

    I have to say, I like that it can switch between floor types. I’ve had two different vacuums, one for hardwood and one for carpet for a long time and I hate it.

    Very cool. Besides for being lightweight (I’m a wimp!), I love the swivel features. I have a ton of stuff cluttering up my house, and this feature would help me get around and under it all with ease!

  96. Okayyyy seriously…I just love it isn’t my parents garage vacuum. Our cheapy vacuum broke and my parents gave us the vacuum they used to clean out their cars. Which means it sat in their garage…which means it’s covered in paint and about a zillion years old and also weighs approx. 89 pounds. I need this vacuum!

    Obviously the fact that it’s so light weight, but also love how flat it goes when vacuuming.

    In undergrad, I cleaned houses as a part time job during the summers, and my favorite houses were the ones that owned an Oreck (and this was 15 years ago!) because I didn’t have to lug a heavy vacuum up and down 3 flights of stairs. Did I learn my lesson? No, I have a horrific bulky (but cheap) vacuum to lug up and down 3 flights of stairs in my own house. *sigh*

    What’s not to like? It’s lightweight, HEPA, 30ft cord–which means I can get the entire house without trying to stretch until the cord pops free of the wall!

    I love that it can go from one surface type to another without manual adjustments because we have alot of surface type in one area. If I stop the vaccuum once it probably won’t get started again, I’d be done cleaning.

    I love Oreck vacuums. Being light weight is always a plus when you have different floors that need cleaned. Kinda would like to see how truly amazing the ‘Amazingly Agile’ part of the vacuum is. I hate having to move things when I vacuum.

    Loving the light-weight-ness above all else! What keeps me from vaccume regularly during the week and seeing it as a PIA chore is how heavy and bulky and CLUNKY our vaccume it. So the fact that this is light, easy and COMPACT is dreamy!

    The “lightweight” concept excites me! I have a not-so-old vacuum cleaner but it seems like I pull a back muscle and take a chunk out of my leg every time I use it (which is not often enough). I hope I win and if I do I might become a model vacuumer!

  148. I can’t even tell you how much I could use “One Easy Sucker!” I love that it only weighs 7.7 lbs and that that SlimSwivel design maneuvers easily around furniture! The heavy, awkward vacuum my prego self currently lugs around is a dinosaur and kills my back!

    Thanks for the review Katie – these look amazing! I love that the handheld has the strap – I think it would make it a lot easier to clean our wooden stairs. I also love that the upright has the brush for cleaning right against the baseboard – am I the only one who hates having to get into those edges?

    Also, I just realized that my level of excitement over a vacuum probably means I’m getting old.

    I like that you can wear the vaccume like a messenger bag! I have a canister vaccume and have to drag that sorry sucker around the house. I’ve got more scuff marks on my base boards than the octomom has stretch marks…just sayin. 😉

    I would love to have a vacuum that wouldn’t be so heavy to go up and down our carpeted stairs. It’s a pain to get into those stairs.

    It looks like the button for switching from Hi to Low is pretty easy to access. I hate that the button on mine is down on the front of the vacuum so I have to bend over to change it!

  163. One Easy Sucker! I’m kinda digging the side brush feature! I know it’s probably not a big deal, but for someone who generally jams the vacuum into the walls to get as close as possible, this would be a big winner!

  164. I love the idea of the side brushes for the baseboards. Baseboards are my worst nightmare and I would love assistance in keeping them dirt free!

    I like that it would actually work on both hardwoods and carpet. My house is mostly hardwood floors, so I need something that actually works on them instead of just blowing dust around!

    The best thing about it? It works! My current vaccuum – well, ALL of my current vaccuums suck. And not in the good way…
    I have two houses and three vaccuums, 2 in one house and 1 in the other, and none of them work well. The oldest one works the best, but it weighs, I’m sure, more than me and I’m NO lightweight! In our primary home we have one on each floor: a canister upstairs and an upright downstairs (no carrying up and down for me!), except that neither of them works well at all. The canister makes a difference on the low napped rugs we have near our bed, but I think that’s ’cause they’re cream and anything that picks up a black piece of lint will appear to work there. But neither of them do well on hardwoods and we only have a couple of area rugs…
    I need a vaccuum that works, please!!!

    I like that the “mode” switch is on the handle. Our current vacuum has both carpet and bare floor, but requires that you either bend down (not easy for us 8-plus-month preggers!) or struggle with your foot to flip the switch. PLUS, lightweight = I’d be more willing to actually clean the entryway of our split-entry house. 🙂 Lugging the vacuum either up or down the stairs to do that part is dumb.

    I’m not even kidding – the best part of this vaccuum is the fact that it has an On/Off switch – our current vaccuum doesn’t 🙁 You literally plug it in, and you have to chase it around the house before you can actually vaccuum on purpose.     I love that it can be used on carpet and hardwood, since my house is hardwood with area rugs as well. Right now I’m lugging a HEAVY Kirby around… it used to be my husband’s grandmother’s and “since she spent so much on it!” (his words) we’re not allowed to buy another one 🙁 Needless to say I hate it and anything would be better!

    Lightweight – that’s what I’ve been hoping for! We have tried so many vacuums, and they are so heavy and difficult to move around.   528. One easy sucker! There are a lot of things that I like about this vacuum: it’s light, the handle flattens for vacuuming under the bed, it can handle different floor types …

    I’m also undecided on weather the separate handheld vacuum is a pro or a con. It’s a pro because it means that I could just pull out the handheld one when I need to vacuum up a spill or the hair in the bathroom. It’s a con because it means that I have to use a separate vacuum when I want to do a thorough vacuuming and get both the middle of the carpet and along the baseboards. I think, though, that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

    I like the extra ‘hose’ vacuum part that you can use without the larger part. We have a 120 lb. lab that sheds like there is no tomorrow.     Side brushes! It has side brushes to clean against the baseboards. I have two shaggy dogs, and when they shed their fur tends to collect in the crack where carpet meets the baseboards. Side brushes would be sooooo helpful for that.

    Our vacuum is pretty old and get’s carried up from the basement every time I need to use it. So, lightweight is a plus. But, I also love the option for sucking on different surfaces. With a mix of flooring in our home, and a brand new fluffy puppy (think shedding), that would SO handy.

    I love how light it is and that it can easily transition between floor types. I have hardwood floors throughout our home which means lots of transitions onto carpets. My current vacuum does not handle this very well and it wounds like the Magnesium will do a much better job.

    What I dig about it…this list could go on forever…ever….haha 1) It is a new vacuum! Our is currently being held together by duct and electrical tape….2) Lightweight! I don’t want to even guess how much ours weighs now…3) I have 2 80 lb hairy children…um dogs! that shed like no one’s business…so I need suction…powerful suction! Those are the high points!

    My apartment is 420 square feet. FOUR HUNDRED AND TWENTY! And almost 100 years old. It’s a tiny lil’ thing and my current vacuum seems to use up a chuck of it. At 7.5 lbs, I could hang the Oreck Magnesium from a hook in the closet and reclaim my precious closet floor space.

  723. My current vacuum is not one easy sucker to deal with! I have a dog that sheds a TON and my little pathetic vacuum does not do the trick. I love that the Magnesium works on all floor types. That’s a big one for me! It also has awesome side brushes!

    We have a Dyson that I LOVE, but my mom has an Oreck and I have to admit—I get very jealous of how lightweight hers is (shhh—-don’t tell my beloved Dyson!) That would definitely be my favorite feature listed on the site—the weight (or lack thereof)

    It’s smaller then any of my kids were at birth, too! I couldn’t vacuum the last several months of my pregnancies because our heavy vacuum gave me contractions and major back pains. I sure hope I win!

    The fact that it is lightweight is awesome. Our current vaccum is extremely heavy and I hate dragging it up and down the stairs. So that means once it is upstairs it takes forever to go back down, so our downstairs carpet has seen better days!

    Plus I love that fact that it comes with a 7 year warranty and 5 annual tune-ups. Sounds like a great machine!!

    My ancient vaccum lost a wheel and my husband “replaced” it with another one. Now it is off balance and almos impossible to push. I NEED this vaccum!

I like how it can transition from surface to surface, our house has too many different flooring types near to each other and it drives me crazy vacuuming one bit and then switching to a broom for another and then lugging the vacuum over to the next little bit and then back to the broom :-/
